Chainsaw Man Chapter 174 supports a grim reading of its world: human officials consider mass child sacrifice an acceptable price for using Chainsaw Man’s power, while that power keeps erasing concepts beyond their control. “There are no heroes, only devils” is a critical interpretation of the chapter—not its verified official title or a statement attributed to creator Tatsuki Fujimoto.
What happens in Chainsaw Man Chapter 174?
VIZ lists the installment as Chainsaw Man, Chapter 174. The plot details discussed here are reported in a secondary chapter summary; VIZ’s reader listing establishes the chapter’s identity but does not, in the available information, verify those granular events.
In that summary, Japanese officials discuss Chainsaw Man’s ability to erase concepts and whether it could be used to advance human progress. Fumiko Mifune, speaking for Public Safety, frames the proposal around removing obstacles. When officials ask what the Aging Devil demands in return, she says it requires 10,000 Japanese children, from infancy through age nine, to be executed in front of a mirror.
The summary also reports that former finance minister Tadashi Hasegawa supports the plan. When another minister objects, Hasegawa threatens that minister’s children. As Fumiko prepares to contact Public Safety, the officials’ mouths disappear. The chapter’s closing revelation, as summarized, extends beyond mouths to other erased concepts, including snow, octopuses, and bitterness.

Why the officials’ bargain undermines the idea of heroism
The proposed bargain turns the language of progress into a moral test. Public Safety’s representative presents erasure as a way to eliminate obstacles, but the reported price is not abstract: it is the killing of children. The gap between the policy’s stated goal and its human cost makes the officials’ effort to manage supernatural power look less like heroism than institutional violence.
Hasegawa’s reported response sharpens that criticism. His support for the proposal and threat against a colleague’s children show one official willing to enforce the bargain through intimidation. That is evidence of his cruelty; it does not establish that every official in the room agrees with him or acts from the same motive.

What the disappearing mouths change
The officials are discussing how to direct erasure when the chapter’s reported turn shows it continuing on its own terms. The disappearance of their mouths is an abrupt counterpoint to their confidence that the power can be made an instrument of policy. The wider list of erased concepts reinforces the scale of the threat, without requiring assumptions about consequences the chapter summary does not establish.
This is where the chapter’s horror and political argument meet: people who imagine themselves capable of controlling a force are themselves caught in its effects. Their willingness to sacrifice others does not make them masters of that force, and the chapter’s escalation offers no simple heroic counterweight.

Does Chapter 174 prove there are no heroes?
Not as a universal claim. The events summarized here support a bleak interpretation of political complicity and uncontrolled power, but they cannot prove that every character is a villain or that Fujimoto explicitly endorses the phrase “no heroes, only devils.” The title works as a critical thesis: in this installment, official language about progress sits beside a demand for child sacrifice, and the power officials hope to use exceeds their control.
Keeping that distinction clear makes the argument stronger. The reported plot supplies the evidence; the judgment that it leaves no room for heroism belongs to interpretation.
