René Redzepi stepped away from leading Noma in March 2026 after former employees’ allegations of abuse and assault were reported. Noma reopened in Copenhagen on August 5 under new day-to-day leadership. Redzepi was reported to remain the restaurant’s owner and creative director, so his departure from its daily operations did not end his association with Noma.
Why did René Redzepi leave Noma?
Redzepi’s departure followed allegations from former employees, as covered in contemporaneous reporting. Those accounts should be understood as allegations attributed to the former employees and the outlets reporting them, not as findings that every allegation was legally established.
In a statement reproduced by The Washington Post, Redzepi said: “An apology is not enough; I take responsibility for my own actions.” The reporting connected the allegations and his response to his decision to step away from leading the restaurant.
Who runs Noma now?
When Noma reopened in Copenhagen on August 5, 2026, its day-to-day leadership was in the hands of longtime staff, according to the Associated Press and reporting by The Local based on the restaurant’s announcement.

Reporting said Redzepi remained owner and creative director but was not involved in daily operations. “Out” therefore describes his departure from leading the restaurant day to day, not a complete break with Noma.
What changed when Noma reopened?
AP described Redzepi’s tenure at Noma as 23 years and reported that the restaurant topped the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list five times. Its August 2026 reopening marked a change in leadership and format, as well as a break from its former Michelin status.

What the change means for Noma
The reopening kept the restaurant operating in Copenhagen under a new leadership structure while Redzepi retained a reported ownership and creative role. The reported monthly menu changes point to an evolving dining program; they do not, by themselves, establish what a particular future menu or reservation offering will include.
For current menus and reservations, check Noma’s own announcements and booking information, since those details can change. The leadership and reopening details here reflect contemporaneous reporting from August 2026.
