Celebrity climate advocacy takes several forms: public messaging, conservation support, demonstrations, election campaigning and coalition work. The examples below show what named figures and organizations say they do, while distinguishing official United Nations roles from campaign organizations’ own reported activity. These affiliations and campaigns can change; the United Nations’ live advocate roster should be checked for current designations.
How to read celebrity climate advocacy
A celebrity’s visibility can draw attention to an issue, but it does not by itself establish scientific expertise or prove that a policy claim is correct. The examples here are best understood by their documented roles and methods—not as a ranking of who is the “best” climate champion. An official designation, an organization’s self-reported results and a dated profile are different kinds of evidence.
Leonardo DiCaprio: public advocacy and conservation support
The United Nations describes Leonardo DiCaprio as an actor, producer and activist, and identifies him as a UN Messenger of Peace for climate change. The UN says he founded the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation in 1998 to support biodiversity, habitat conservation and climate solutions. That record combines public advocacy with organizational and conservation activity.
A separate UN Messenger of Peace profile says the foundation supports over 35 conservation projects protecting fragile ecosystems and key species. The UN page does not state the year for that figure. A project count indicates the breadth of supported work, not a measured climate impact or emissions reduction.

Jane Fonda: demonstrations and electoral advocacy
Fire Drill Fridays
TIME’s April 25, 2024 profile says Fonda founded Fire Drill Fridays with Greenpeace USA in 2019 to demand legislative action on the climate crisis. This is public mobilization aimed at political action. In the same profile, after accepting a TIME Earth Award, Fonda said: “One of the big problems is that we’ve become alienated from nature.”
Jane Fonda Climate PAC
The PAC says its objective is to elect climate-conscious leaders at state and local levels. It reports that it supported 154 campaigns and won 96 races in the 2024 election cycle; it also says 81% of its endorsed candidates were women and/or people of color. These are the PAC’s own reported figures, not independently audited measures of climate outcomes.
Rank #2
United Nations advocates: a roster, not a single campaign
The UN’s ActNow page describes its listed advocates as “People who are working with the United Nations system to advocate for climate action and a more sustainable world.” The roster includes people from different fields and countries, among them Gisele Bündchen, Adrian Grenier, Don Cheadle, Ellie Goulding, Jack Johnson and Michelle Yeoh, as well as DiCaprio. The page assigns a role to each person; those roles should not be assumed to be identical, and the live page is the authority for current designations.
For a reader asking what a particular figure has done, the useful next step is to look beyond the label: identify the listed role, the issue named by the organization and the activity documented. A UN title establishes an affiliation and advocacy role, not scientific credentials or proof that a particular intervention has worked.

Artists for Amazonia: coalition advocacy
Artists for Amazonia describes artist participation in campaigns alongside Indigenous and environmental organizations. Its overview says the coalition works on human rights, corporate accountability and preservation of Amazon ecological systems, and describes advocacy connected to the EU Deforestation Law and the Amazon. These descriptions are the organization’s account of its campaigns; they show a coalition mechanism rather than evidence that celebrity participation alone determines policy outcomes.

| Example | Documented role or mechanism | Issue focus in the cited source | How to interpret the evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leonardo DiCaprio | UN Messenger of Peace; foundation founder | Climate change, biodiversity and habitat conservation | UN designation and foundation activity; over 35 supported projects is a UN-reported count, not an impact measure. |
| Jane Fonda | Fire Drill Fridays co-founder; PAC advocacy | Climate legislation and electing climate-conscious state and local leaders | TIME profile is dated April 25, 2024; PAC campaign and candidate figures are self-reported for the 2024 election cycle. |
| UN ActNow advocates | People working with the UN system in assigned advocate roles | Climate action and a more sustainable world | Use the live UN roster to confirm a person’s current designation; listed roles are not interchangeable. |
| Artists for Amazonia | Artist participation in coalition campaigns | Human rights, corporate accountability and Amazon ecological systems | Campaign description comes from the organization’s own overview. |
These examples establish several ways that public figures may participate in sustainability advocacy. They do not establish a comprehensive global list, a comparable measure of effectiveness, an advocate’s personal emissions or the scientific validity of every claim associated with a campaign.
