Rebecca Ann Heineman, the pioneering video game developer who won a national Space Invaders championship as a teenager and later helped build Interplay Productions, died in Rockwall, Texas, on November 17, 2025. She was 62. Her son confirmed her death to Ars Technica; Game Developer also reported it. Both accounts tied her death to adenocarcinoma.
How Rebecca Heineman became a national video game champion
Born in Whittier, California, on October 30, 1963, Heineman was 16 when she won the 1980 national Atari 2600 Space Invaders championship in New York. Ars Technica describes her as the first formally recognized U.S. video game champion—a distinction tied to that organized championship, rather than a claim about every contest that preceded it.
The achievement put her in the public eye before game development had become a mature industry. She would go on to make games herself, working across programming, design, technical development, and ports.
What games and studios was Rebecca Heineman known for?
Interplay and influential role-playing games
In 1983, Heineman co-founded Interplay Productions with Brian Fargo, Jay Patel, and Troy Worrell. Her design and programming work included The Bard’s Tale III, Dragon Wars, and Wasteland, games that helped establish Interplay’s reputation in computer role-playing and adventure games. Game Developer’s obituary records her broad contribution to the studio’s early work.

Later studios and a wide-ranging career
After Interplay, Heineman founded Logicware and Contraband Entertainment and co-founded Olde Sküül. Her work extended beyond original game design to programming, ports, and other technical contributions. Ars Technica quoted MobyGames’ catalog as listing 67 games credited to her in its November 2025 report. That is a catalog count at the time, not a definitive or independently audited total.

Her advocacy and LGBTQ+ visibility

She became a visible transgender developer and LGBTQ+ advocate, served on GLAAD’s board, and received the Gayming Icon Award in 2025. Andrew Borman, director of digital preservation at The Strong National Museum of Play, told Ars that “Her legacy goes beyond her groundbreaking work in video games,” pointing to her advocacy and the inspiration she offered others.

In a GoFundMe update on November 16, she wrote: “It’s time. According to my doctors. All further treatments are pointless.
