She also described the uncertainty and family pressures that preceded her disclosure, and later said she hoped her documentary would help raise awareness of the condition.
Why did Céline Dion go public?
In a 2024 interview with TODAY’s Hoda Kotb, Dion explained that concealing her condition had become emotionally burdensome. As ABC News Australia reported, she said, “Lying for me was, the burden was like too much,” and, “Lying to the people who got me where I am today, I could not do it anymore.” The remarks describe her personal reason for speaking; they do not establish a broader public-relations motive. Why did she keep it private at first?
Dion said she initially did not understand what was happening. “We did not know what was going on,” she said, adding that she had not taken the time she should have to stop and figure it out. She also described trying to care for her children and keep going while her husband, René Angélil, was seriously ill: “I had to raise my kids. I had to hide. I had to try to be a hero.” These were parts of her account of that period, not a definitive list of every reason she delayed telling the public. Rolling Stone Canada, June 10, 2024
Dion announced her diagnosis to fans in December 2022, according to NBC News. Her explanation of the disclosure came later, in the 2024 interview with Kotb, which NBC described as her first television interview since the diagnosis. The chronology matters: she described early uncertainty and personal pressures before explaining why the burden of concealment eventually became too much.

What did she hope her documentary would do?
In a separate interview about I Am: Celine Dion, Dion said she hoped the film would “awaken[] people to SPS” rather than frighten them, and encourage people who recognize symptoms to speak with doctors. She also reflected on the time it took to receive her diagnosis: “It took 17 years for me—please don’t wait that long.” That is her personal account, not a general timeline for diagnosing the condition. Vogue, May 23, 2024
The documentary was released globally and exclusively on Prime Video on June 25, 2024, as Vogue reported at the time. That historical release information does not establish present availability in every region.

What is stiff-person syndrome?
Stiff-person syndrome (SPS) is a neurological condition that can cause muscle spasms and may be misdiagnosed, according to a George Washington University media tip sheet.
