Charlie Kirk was shot at a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, on September 10, 2025. He was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead later that day. Kirk was 31 and co-founded the conservative organization Turning Point USA.

What happened at Utah Valley University

Utah’s Department of Public Safety said Kirk was speaking at a student-sponsored Turning Point USA event in the university’s outdoor quad at about 12:20 p.m. local time. The agency said he was taken to Timpanogos Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead later that day. Utah Department of Public Safety described the shooting as believed to be targeted and said the shooter was believed to have fired from a building rooftop toward the public event. Those were the agency’s initial assessments.

In its contemporaneous account, Utah DPS reported approximately 3,000 attendees and six UVU police officers assigned to the event, in addition to Kirk’s private security detail. These are figures reported by the agency, not independent measurements of attendance or staffing.

The FBI updates page describes video showing a person climbing onto a rooftop, firing, jumping down, and fleeing. It also says a gun and ammunition were left in a wooded area near the university. The FBI page says a suspect is in custody.

Who was Charlie Kirk?

Kirk was a conservative activist, a close ally of President Donald Trump, and a co-founder of Turning Point USA. He was 31 when he was killed. The Associated Press reported that his appearance at UVU was part of a planned series of college events called the American Comeback Tour.

Who is charged in the shooting?

As of the Associated Press’s September 2026 report, Tyler Robinson had been charged with aggravated murder, a charge that could carry the death penalty if he is convicted. A judge had ordered the case to proceed toward trial, but no trial date had been set in that report. A charge is an allegation; Robinson has not been convicted.

At a July preliminary hearing, prosecutors presented evidence that AP described as including surveillance video, DNA evidence prosecutors said linked Robinson to a rifle, and a handwritten note prosecutors said he allegedly left. These are prosecutors’ assertions reported by AP, not findings of guilt.

What the family’s wrongful-death notice alleges

AP reported that Kirk’s family filed a wrongful-death notice against Utah officials and Utah Valley University. The notice is a procedural step before a possible formal claim or lawsuit under state law, not a court ruling. The family’s attorneys alleged failures in event security and preparation, and the notice alleged that the fatal shot came from more than 400 feet (122 meters) away. That distance is the family’s allegation as reported by AP, not an independently established measurement.

UVU said it was aware of the notice and would address it through established processes. The Utah Attorney General’s Office said it does not comment on potential litigation. No court finding on the family’s allegations is described in AP’s report.

What UVU’s review found and what the university changed

In 2026, UVU announced the release of an independent external review of planning, preparedness, response, and recovery related to the shooting. The review said the university needed more consistent implementation of existing safety policies, clearer responsibilities, and stronger coordination for major events and emergencies.

The review commissioned by UVU also stated: “It is the opinion of the Project Team, based on our review of all available information, that at no time during the events leading up to the assassination of Charlie Kirk, or in its aftermath, did any employee or agent of UVU act in bad faith or in willful and wanton disregard for the safety of others.” That is the review team’s opinion, not a judicial ruling.

UVU said it had created a Chief Public Safety Officer position and was pursuing required safety training, stronger event-security planning and ticketing procedures, and closer coordination with external law enforcement. University president Jon Anderson said, “September 10 will always be part of UVU’s history, but it will not define our future. Our responsibility is to care for our community, learn from the findings of this review, and follow through on its recommendations. This requires humility, an honest examination of our policies and practices, and a commitment to act on what we learn.”

How to distinguish the accounts

The available accounts address different questions and carry different weight. Utah DPS’s statement records what authorities reported soon after the shooting; the FBI page provides its public update on the investigation. UVU’s commissioned review assesses university planning and response, while prosecutors’ evidence and the family’s notice contain claims made in legal proceedings. None of those categories should be mistaken for a court’s final determination of criminal guilt or civil liability.
