She described a debilitating first trimester marked by relentless nausea and repeated hospital visits. The announcement is historical: the couple welcomed their son Oliver Herb Lambert in November 2024.
What Abbey Gelmi said about her pregnancy and HG
In her account, reproduced by 7NEWS on 24 May 2024, Gelmi said HG had made her first trimester extremely difficult. “While we’re so grateful to be adding to our family, HG has been debilitating,” she wrote.
She said she had been in hospital three days a week for most of the first trimester, was unable to keep anything down, and could not leave bed because of relentless nausea. She also described becoming dizzy when she stood, being unable to care for her first child, Louis, and experiencing a decline in her mental health. These details describe Gelmi’s reported experience, not a pattern that applies to everyone with HG.
Gelmi thanked her obstetrician and nurses, her family, and Seven and iHeart for their support and accommodations. She also directed people who were suffering to Hyperemesis Australia as a place to start.

What hyperemesis gravidarum is
Australian healthdirect describes HG as very severe pregnancy sickness that can make it difficult to eat and drink enough. RCOG’s patient guidance describes symptoms severe enough to disrupt normal activities and prevent normal eating and drinking. If untreated, HG may lead to dehydration and weight loss. Gelmi described her own experience as HG; her account is not an independent medical diagnosis.
The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists said in its 2024 guideline update announcement that HG affects approximately 1–3 in 100 pregnant women and people. That is a population-level estimate, not a statistic specific to Gelmi.

How HG differs from ordinary morning sickness
Pregnancy sickness varies, but the concern with HG is the severity and its effect on a person’s ability to function and maintain food and fluids. Persistent vomiting that prevents drinking, signs of dehydration, or significant weight loss call for clinical attention; the appropriate assessment and care depend on the individual.
When to seek medical advice for severe pregnancy sickness
Healthdirect advises seeking medical advice for severe symptoms. It identifies being unable to keep fluids down, very dark urine, blood in vomit, extreme tiredness, and significant weight loss as reasons to contact a doctor. Speak with a midwife, doctor, or maternity-care provider rather than trying to diagnose or manage severe symptoms alone.

Clinicians may consider antiemetic medicines, and hospital care can include intravenous fluids when symptoms warrant it. A care team can assess the person’s condition and determine whether outpatient or hospital care is appropriate. RCOG also notes that HG can affect mood, work, home life, and social life, so its effects may extend beyond physical symptoms.

In a later report, 7NEWS said Gelmi and Lambert welcomed their second child, Oliver Herb Lambert, in November 2024. The May announcement should therefore be read as a report about that pregnancy, not as news of a current pregnancy.
