A little over a month earlier, she had described her terminal acute myeloid leukemia diagnosis in a personal essay for The New Yorker.
What Schlossberg disclosed
In “A Battle With My Blood,” published November 22, 2025, Schlossberg wrote that she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) after the birth of her second child, a daughter, in May 2024. She said an unusually high white blood cell count after the birth led to further tests and the diagnosis. Her account is in her first-person essay in The New Yorker.
Schlossberg described her leukemia as having a rare “Inversion 3” mutation. She recounted undergoing chemotherapy and stem-cell transplants, as well as receiving treatment through a clinical trial. These are details of her own experience, not a guide to treatment for other patients.
How she described the diagnosis and prognosis
Schlossberg wrote about revisiting memories and the prospect of losing them: “Maybe my brain is replaying my life now because I have a terminal diagnosis, and all these memories will be lost.” In the essay, she also reported that a doctor told her he might be able to keep her alive for about another year. That was an estimate she recounted in the context of her individual case; it should not be read as a general prognosis for AML or as a verified prediction of her survival time.

Beyond her personal essay, Schlossberg wrote about environmental issues. Her 2019 book, Inconspicuous Consumption: The Environmental Impact You Don’t Know You Have, won the Society of Environmental Journalists’ Rachel Carson Environment Book Award in 2020, according to AP. The book offers a way to explore her environmental journalism; it is not related to her cancer treatment.
