Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman anchor the cat-and-mouse setup, while the airport setting turns an ordinary work shift into a high-pressure standoff.
What is Carry-On about?
Netflix’s official premise follows young TSA agent Ethan Kopek as a mysterious traveler threatens him and tries to force a dangerous package through airport security onto a Christmas Eve flight. The traveler’s threats also put Ethan’s pregnant girlfriend, Nora, in danger. That setup supplies the film’s central dilemma without giving away later turns.

The holiday setting is more than decoration: it puts the crisis amid seasonal airport crowds and Christmas trimmings. Director Jaume Collet-Serra said he hoped the film could work “all year round as a fun, popcorn thriller,” while noting that Christmas decorations and classic holiday tunes were integral to its setting. Netflix Tudum’s feature on the film discusses the seasonal frame and production.

Egerton described his approach to Ethan as avoiding the archetypal action hero: “What we kept our eyes on was making sure that we made him feel as relatable and as normal as possible … whatever normal is in the extraordinary situation he’s in.” Bateman, meanwhile, said he saw the Traveler as a person with a job to do, rather than a cartoon villain. Those contrasting approaches set up the film’s personal, close-quarters conflict.

How does the airport setting shape the thriller?
The story is set at Los Angeles International Airport, but the production filmed at the retired Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in New Orleans and redesigned it to resemble LAX. Collet-Serra described contained spaces as a way to get close to characters quickly, as well as a visual challenge: the filmmakers had to find different ways to shoot a small space and reveal details of its world.
Netflix Tudum reports that two LAX TSA advisers helped train actors and advise the production. Dr. Erroll G. Southers said his role was to support situational accuracy around airport agencies and make the actors’ terminology and interactions feel realistic. That consultation is not a guarantee that every screening procedure or event shown in the film reflects real-world TSA practice.

Jaume Collet-Serra directed the film, with a screenplay by Michael Green and T.J. Fixman; Dylan Clark produced it. Collet-Serra has also directed the transport-set thrillers Non-Stop and The Commuter. That background is useful context for the confined setting, but it does not mean the films share a plot.
When was it released, and where can you watch it?
