Cartoon Network and Aardman released an approximately three-minute Over the Garden Wall stop-motion short on November 3, 2024, for the series’ 10th anniversary. Directed by Dan Ojari and Mikey Please in collaboration with creator Patrick McHale, it uses hand-carved wooden puppets and miniature sets. McHale has not confirmed where the short fits in the original story.
When the short was released
Aardman announced the anniversary project on November 3, 2024, in partnership with Cartoon Network and Patrick McHale. Engadget reported a runtime of about three minutes and said it was available on YouTube and X at release. That describes its launch-day availability; whether it remains accessible on those platforms is not established here. Aardman’s announcement and Engadget’s release report document the launch.
Who made it, and which voices returned?
Dan Ojari and Mikey Please directed the short. The project brought together Aardman, Cartoon Network, and McHale, the creator of the original series. Production credits published by Dragonframe list McHale as series creator, writer, executive producer, and voice director; Alan Thorpe as producer; and Helen Argo, Sarah Cox, and McHale as executive producers. Dragonframe’s production account also credits returning performers Elijah Wood as Wirt, Collin Dean as Greg, Melanie Lynskey as Beatrice, and Frank Fairfield as the Narrator/Toymaker.
How the stop-motion short was made
Puppets, sets, and facial animation
The production used hand-carved wooden puppets and miniature sets, a tangible change from the original miniseries’ hand-drawn television animation. Engadget reported that the forest set took two months to build and described it as “10-by-10 square meter.” That is the source’s wording; it is unusual, so it should not be silently converted into a different dimension or shape. Co-director Mikey Please told Engadget, “The only thing that’s digital is the facial animation.” The statement distinguishes the facial work from the puppet-based production, rather than suggesting the entire short was made without digital tools.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Camera and capture workflow
In Dragonframe’s production account, director of photography Toby Howell said, “Dragonframe was integrated throughout the process.” The crew used Canon 1DX camera bodies with Zeiss ZF2 and Nikon prime lenses. Howell describes using the software for animation capture, technical plates, lighting states, and motion control. The team also shot separate plates for compositing haze and foreground foliage, created multiple lighting states for mattes, and coordinated camera movement. These are details of this production’s workflow, not a universal stop-motion recipe.
How the collaboration came about
McHale told Inverse that he approached directors Mikey Please and Dan Ojari because he admired their short Robin Robin and knew they liked Over the Garden Wall. His account describes McHale initiating contact with the directors; it does not establish that he alone arranged every part of the broader Cartoon Network–Aardman partnership.

Where does it fit in the original story?
McHale declined to identify the short’s exact place in the original timeline. In the Inverse interview, he said: “I don’t think I can answer this question, unfortunately. I think people will just have to decide that for themselves.” The short is therefore an anniversary project whose precise canon placement has been left open, not a confirmed continuation at a particular point in Wirt and Greg’s journey.

McHale said the short did not make him want to expand the franchise, explaining, “I wouldn’t want to mess with it. But there are other projects I’d love to make that have a similar vibe!” Those were his comments in the November 2024 Inverse interview, not a guarantee about future projects. The short celebrates the original series without announcing a continuation.
