Calling her participation anti-feminist is an interpretation of the public meaning of that choice—not a documented statement about her beliefs or a conclusion shared by all feminists. The strongest case for the critique is that her performance lent a celebrated cultural voice to the opening of an administration that, on the same day, declared a federal policy recognizing two sexes and defining sex as an immutable biological classification.
What Carrie Underwood did—and what she said
The Associated Press reported on January 13, 2025, that Underwood was scheduled to sing “America the Beautiful” shortly before Trump took the oath of office. In a statement reported by AP, she said: “I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event. I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.” Associated Press, January 13, 2025
At the ceremony, Underwood sang a cappella after an apparent technical problem disrupted or delayed the accompaniment, The Washington Post reported. That mishap shaped how the performance sounded, but it does not answer the separate question of what it meant for her to accept the invitation. The Washington Post, January 20, 2025
Why critics may read the performance as anti-feminist
An inauguration is both a civic ceremony and a highly visible display of a new administration’s authority. A performer need not endorse every policy of the incoming president for participation to confer ceremony, attention, and cultural legitimacy on the occasion. From that perspective, the critique is about the public symbolism of taking a prominent role at the launch of this administration, not proof of Underwood’s private politics.

The context is especially relevant to a feminist reading because Trump’s executive order “Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism And Restoring Biological Truth To The Federal Government,” dated January 20, 2025, states: “It is the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female.” The order defines sex as an individual’s “immutable biological classification as either male or female.” Those are the administration’s stated policy positions, not neutral scientific findings. White House executive order, January 20, 2025
A critic who views feminism as requiring resistance to policies that constrain recognition or rights on the basis of sex and gender may see participation in the inauguration as inconsistent with that commitment. The argument rests on the performance’s symbolic effect in its political setting. It is not an official finding about Underwood, and the cited reporting does not establish that she endorsed the executive order.

Why the label is a judgment, not a settled fact
Underwood gave unity and national belonging as her stated reasons for accepting the invitation. Performing at an official civic ceremony can be understood as an act of patriotism or participation in a national ritual rather than agreement with the administration’s entire agenda. That distinction does not erase the performance’s public symbolism, but it matters when assessing what can fairly be inferred about the singer.
The announcement drew criticism on social media, as The Independent reported. That establishes that backlash occurred; it does not show that all fans, feminists, or members of the public shared the criticism, or measure how widespread it was. The Independent

The available reporting and official text therefore support a reasoned critique of the choice’s symbolism, but not a definitive verdict on Underwood’s personal beliefs or a universal feminist position. The distinction is between what her appearance may communicate publicly and what she has been shown to believe privately.
