The Music Academy, Madras, named Carnatic vocalist T. M. Krishna its 2024 Sangita Kalanidhi. Its official history lists him as the 2024 recipient, but the date of the formal conferment is unclear: the Academy’s souvenir scheduled the ceremony for 1 January 2025, while March 2024 news reports described the title as conferred then. Those dates should not be treated as interchangeable.
What the Sangita Kalanidhi award recognizes
The Music Academy, Madras, says it decided in 1942 that the musician invited to preside over its annual conference would be conferred the title Sangita Kalanidhi. The Academy describes the award as a gold medal and a birudu patra, or citation. Its award history lists T. M. Krishna under 2024. Music Academy, Madras: Sangita Kalanidhi
Announcement and ceremony: why the dates differ
The Academy’s official 2024 souvenir describes its 98th Annual Conference and Concerts as running from 15 December 2024 to 1 January 2025. It says Krishna would receive the Sangita Kalanidhi birudu at the Sadas on 1 January 2025. That establishes the Academy’s published schedule, not by itself the date the title was formally conferred. Music Academy, Madras: Music Academy Souvenir 2024
In contrast, India Today and The Indian Express published reports on 21 March 2024 describing the award as conferred in March. The available accounts therefore conflict with the souvenir’s planned January 2025 ceremony. Without a definitive confirmation of what occurred at the Sadas, it is safest to distinguish the Academy’s 2024 selection and published ceremony schedule from the March 2024 date reported by those outlets. Why Ranjani and Gayatri objected
Carnatic musicians Ranjani and Gayatri objected to the Academy’s decision and withdrew from the December conference, which Krishna was expected to preside over. The March reports described their objection as concerning his public views and statements. This was their stated position; it should not be presented as an established finding about the award’s merits. India Today, 21 March 2024; The Indian Express, 21 March 2024
Academy president N. Murali defended the selection as recognition of musical excellence. That defense reflects the Academy president’s stated reason for the choice, distinct from the objections raised by Ranjani and Gayatri. India Today, 21 March 2024

Do not confuse it with the M. S. Subbulakshmi Award
A later court dispute reported in December 2024 concerned a separate honor named the Sangita Kalanidhi M. S. Subbulakshmi Award. It was not a challenge to the Music Academy’s Sangita Kalanidhi title awarded to Krishna. The Indian Express, 16 December 2024
