Video reports show contact between the two; they do not establish either person’s motive. Taveras later said she had been trying to get a photo of the dress and publicly criticized the way she was treated.
What happened on the Cannes red carpet?
The encounter took place on May 24, 2024, as Taveras attended the Cannes premiere of The Count of Monte Cristo. Reports describe her climbing the Palais des Festivals stairs and pausing to pose while displaying the train of her gown. The Independent identifies her as a Dominican actor and TV presenter; the film was directed by Matthieu Delaporte and based on Alexandre Dumas’s novel.
Descriptions of the video say a female usher gestured for Taveras to keep moving and placed an arm across or around her. Taveras then pushed or put her hand toward the usher. The available accounts describe what can be seen, but do not establish why the usher intervened or what either woman intended by the physical contact. The Independent’s May 25 report and TheWrap’s May 25 report covered the encounter.
What was Taveras trying to show?
The white gown had a long train featuring a portrait of Jesus Christ. The Independent reported that Taveras credited designer Giannina Azar and said Yan Páez hand-painted the image. In an Instagram post, she described the design as a work featuring Christ created for the 77th Cannes Film Festival. The Independent’s May 26 coverage reported those details.

In a June 4 interview with TMZ, Taveras said she had been trying to get a photo of the dress when the guard intervened and hurried her up the stairs. That is Taveras’s account of her own intention and of the interaction, not an independently established explanation for the usher’s actions. TMZ reported the interview.
What did Taveras say about the encounter?
The Los Angeles Times reproduced a May 2024 Instagram statement in which Taveras called the incident “definitely a historical moment to remember” and said, “because of the color of our skin, or becouse of Jesus Christ portrait on my dress , It wasent Right the way she treat us.” Those are Taveras’s words and her interpretation of the treatment; they are not a finding about the usher’s motive. The Los Angeles Times published the statement.

Was this the same usher involved in other Cannes incidents?
Reports described the woman as the same usher who had earlier exchanged words with singer Kelly Rowland at the festival. Madame Figaro also recounted a separate incident involving model Sawa Pontyjska. These related encounters provide context, but they do not establish why the usher acted as she did with Taveras.
The Los Angeles Times said the guard had not been publicly identified at the time of its May 31 report. The sources reviewed here do not establish a reliable public name, so claims naming her should be treated cautiously. Madame Figaro’s account covers the incidents involving several celebrities. After her own earlier encounter, Rowland told AP Entertainment, “The woman knows what happened; I know what happened,” and added, “I have a boundary, and I stand by those boundaries and that is it.” Rowland’s remarks concerned her exchange, not Taveras’s.

Did Cannes explain why the usher moved Taveras?
The reviewed reporting does not include a specific Cannes explanation for this individual interaction. TheWrap reported that Cannes representatives had not immediately responded to its request for comment. That leaves the usher’s reason unconfirmed; neither the video descriptions nor Taveras’s account settle it.
Does Cannes’s later dress policy explain the 2024 incident?
No. In 2025, Cannes clarified its charter to prohibit nudity and said voluminous outfits—particularly large trains that impede guest traffic or complicate theater seating—were not permitted. The Associated Press quoted the festival as saying, “The aim is not to regulate attire per se, but to prohibit full nudity on the red carpet, in accordance with the institutional framework of the event and French law.” The festival said the rules made explicit requirements that had long been in effect. This clarification came after Taveras’s 2024 appearance; it is not evidence that the policy governed that encounter or explains the usher’s conduct. The Associated Press reported the 2025 clarification.

How widely did the video circulate?
The Indian Express reported on May 26, 2024, that the Pop Crave video had received more than 23.2 million views. That was the outlet’s time-specific report of the video’s view count, not an independently audited figure or a current total. The Indian Express covered the viral clip.
