Cardi B was found not liable on September 2, 2025, in a civil lawsuit brought by Emani Ellis, a security guard who alleged that the rapper scratched and spat on her during a 2018 encounter outside a Beverly Hills obstetrician’s office. A Los Angeles County jury unanimously found for Cardi B after about an hour of deliberation. This was a civil verdict, not a criminal acquittal.
What did the jury decide?
The 12-member jury in Alhambra, California, unanimously found Cardi B not liable. The Associated Press reported that nine of the 12 jurors were required to reach a civil verdict in this case; all 12 agreed. Deliberations lasted about an hour, according to the AP. The decision resolved Ellis’s civil claims against Cardi B. It does not mean a criminal court acquitted the rapper: this was a lawsuit seeking civil liability, not a criminal prosecution.
What was the lawsuit about?
Ellis, then a security guard at a Beverly Hills medical building, sued Cardi B, whose legal name is Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar. The case concerned an encounter outside an obstetrician’s office in February 2018, when Cardi B was pregnant and had not publicly announced it. Ellis’s allegations
Ellis alleged that Cardi B scratched her face with a long nail extension and spat on her. The lawsuit included claims of assault, battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Coverage reported a $24 million damages figure, but the AP noted that the complaint did not specify a total; the figure was cited by Cardi B while testifying. It should therefore be understood as a reported claim, not an amount established in the complaint or awarded by the jury. Cardi B’s account
Cardi B testified that the two argued but that there was no physical contact. She denied spitting on Ellis or using racial epithets. Those accounts were contested at trial; the verdict found Cardi B not liable rather than turning either party’s account into a separate finding of fact. Reuters trial coverage

What did the parties say after the verdict?
Outside the courthouse, Cardi B told reporters, “I will say it on my deathbed. I did not touch that woman,” the AP reported. Associated Press
Ellis told Reuters, “I don’t want it to be overlooked. I don’t want it to be something that’s brushed under the rug.” She also said, “What she did to me was real.” These were Ellis’s reactions after trial, not judicial findings. Reuters

Was an appeal filed?
Ellis’s lawyer, Ron Rosen Janfaza, said outside court that the plaintiff planned to appeal, according to the AP. The available reporting cited here does not establish whether an appeal was later filed or resolved, so the post-verdict appeal status remains unclear. Associated Press
