Captain America: Brave New World has a political-conspiracy-thriller setup and action that some critics praised, but the reviews do not support calling it the best Marvel movie in years. It is a mixed new chapter for Sam Wilson: potentially worthwhile for viewers who want a grounded superhero adventure, less so for anyone hoping for a tightly told story on the level of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
What kind of Captain America film is it?
Directed by Julius Onah, Captain America: Brave New World opened in cinemas on February 14, 2025. Anthony Mackie leads as Sam Wilson, now carrying Captain America’s shield, with Harrison Ford as Thaddeus Ross. The cast also includes Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Carl Lumbly, Xosha Roquemore, Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler and Tim Blake Nelson. Disney’s film press kit lists the production and cast details.

The film reaches for the political and espionage atmosphere associated with Captain America: The Winter Soldier. In Rotten Tomatoes’ first-review roundup, Julian Lytle of The Beat said it “plays with the conspiracy thriller genre story much like Captain America: The Winter Soldier did eleven years ago.” That is a comparison of genre and approach, not a promise that the newer film matches its predecessor’s execution.
What works—and what doesn’t?
Action is the clearest strength
Several early positive notices highlighted the action and the film’s more grounded thriller direction. Slant Magazine’s Jake Cole, quoted in Rotten Tomatoes’ roundup, called the action “some of the most coherently mounted of any Marvel film to date.” The Associated Press critic Mark Kennedy also credited Onah with handling the action effectively.

- As he takes on the mantle of Captain America, Sam Wilson soon finds himself in the middle of an international incident. In a race against time, Sam must unravel a nefarious global plot before the true mastermind has the entire world seeing red. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
The story and editing draw criticism
The reservations are substantial. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus says Mackie capably takes up the mantle and shield, but calls the film too routine and weighed down by uninteresting Easter eggs to feel like a worthy solo adventure. The first-review roundup also records complaints about the script and franchise obligations. Kennedy’s Associated Press review was sharply negative overall, faulting quieter sections and the editing even while acknowledging the action.
That split points to the practical trade-off: viewers may enjoy individual action sequences and the political-thriller mood without finding the plot or pacing equally compelling. Kennedy also noted product placements for GMC, Dell and Peloton; those are his observations in the AP review, not a measure of the film’s overall quality.

How do critics and audiences rate it?
Rotten Tomatoes’ page showed a 46% Tomatometer from 368 critic reviews and a 75% Popcornmeter from more than 10,000 verified ratings on October 8, 2026. These are changing aggregator snapshots, not fixed judgments or universal audience measures. The critics’ consensus emphasizes routine plotting and continuity baggage; the site’s audience summary is more positive about the expected Marvel action. See the Rotten Tomatoes film page for its current ratings and availability information.
Is it a good first feature for Sam Wilson?
It is Mackie’s central feature-film outing as Captain America, and the reviews recognize that he capably takes on the role. Whether that makes the film a satisfying solo adventure is more debatable: the critical response suggests the character and performance are stronger than the surrounding story. If your main interest is seeing Sam take up the shield in a feature-length Marvel story, that may be enough to make it appealing; if you want a focused, self-contained drama, the reported script and continuity problems are reasons to temper expectations.

- Steve Rogers wields the shield in Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. Then it?s Sam Wilson who unleashes his wings and takes up the mantle in Captain America: Brave New World. Join them as they fight evil global forces with this action-packed 4-movie set.
Do you need to watch other Marvel films first?
The reviews identify MCU Easter eggs and franchise obligations as part of the film’s burden, but the sources available do not establish a required watch list. The safest expectation is that some references may land better with broader Marvel familiarity; it would be misleading to claim that a specific set of earlier films is essential. The film’s conspiracy-thriller premise can be described on its own, but its place in the franchise is not wholly standalone.
