It may coat strands and make them feel softer, but that cosmetic effect is not the same as prompting follicles to grow new hair. Mustard oil can also irritate skin or cause an allergic reaction.
What mustard oil can—and cannot—do for hair
Mustard oil has a history of use as a scalp massage or hair-conditioning oil. A coating of oil may temporarily soften hair, but that does not demonstrate new growth from the follicles or treatment of thinning. Acıbadem International’s medically reviewed overview, published August 19, 2026, says mustard oil has not been shown to regrow hair or reverse hair loss. Acıbadem International’s evidence-based guide also says it has not been shown to cure dandruff or treat eczema.
Healthline’s 2019 review likewise describes limited research specifically on mustard oil and hair. Any conditioning effect should be understood as a possible cosmetic benefit, not clinical evidence of hair growth. What the studies actually tell us
The available studies do not establish that mustard oil alone regrows hair in people. Their research questions and designs differ from a clinical trial measuring hair growth.

- Laboratory antifungal testing: A 1992 study tested Indian hair oils against four dermatophyte species. Mustard oil showed the least toxicity to those test species, but this was a laboratory comparison of fungal growth—not a human study of hair loss or regrowth. PubMed record for the 1992 study.
- Small comparison within a study of formulated oils: A 2014 study involved 30 volunteers in six groups of five and compared formulated oils with mustard oil over 60 days. Its main subject was formulated herbal oils; the small mustard-oil comparison does not provide robust evidence for a general hair-regrowth claim. PubMed Central record for the 2014 study.
Neither study supplies a reliable percentage for how much mustard oil grows hair or reduces hair loss. The evidence does not justify treating traditional use, laboratory findings, or a small comparison as proof of effectiveness.
Mustard oil products are not all the same
Food-grade expressed mustard oil and concentrated mustard essential oil are different products. Acıbadem warns against swallowing mustard essential oil or applying it undiluted to skin. Check the label and use a product only for its stated purpose; a culinary oil should not automatically be treated as a scalp product.

Possible scalp reactions and safer use
Topical mustard oil may cause irritation, burning, or allergic contact dermatitis, particularly in sensitive skin or when the skin barrier is damaged. People with a mustard allergy or an unexplained rash should avoid applying it. If you choose to try a product intended for topical use, Healthline advises testing a tiny amount on the forearm and waiting 24 hours for redness, swelling, itching, or a rash. A patch test is not a guarantee that a later scalp application will be safe.
Rinse it off and stop using it if you develop redness, itching, tingling, burning, or discomfort. Seek medical advice for a persistent reaction or if hair loss or thinning continues; those problems can have causes that an oil will not address.

When to get help for hair loss
Persistent or unexplained thinning deserves assessment rather than reliance on a home oil treatment. A clinician can help evaluate the hair loss and any scalp symptoms. The 2019 Healthline article recommends consulting a medical professional about hair loss or thinning and persistent scalp rash or irritation.
For readers considering mustard oil only as a conditioning practice, the key distinction is simple: temporary softness may be a cosmetic effect, but current evidence does not show that mustard oil regrows hair.
