Camila Cabello’s metallic gown had deliberately distressed rips near the hem; she described them as part of its design, not an accident. Separately, a later report said the dress tore at the slit as she left the 2024 Met Gala. That reported tear is distinct from the intentional styling, and its cause and timing have not been confirmed.
Which rips were part of the design?
Cabello attended the 2024 Met Gala in a metallic, lace-up V-neck gown by Ludovic de Saint Sernin. She told Extra that she, stylist Jared Ellner and the designer collaborated on the look. Cabello said the rips toward the ends of the dress expressed “impermanence and things decaying over time and the beauty in that.”
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, in a quotation carried by The Independent, she described the hem as looking “like it’s falling apart” as she climbed the steps. She added, “Things are melting, it’s hot, that is the vibe.” Those remarks explain the concept of the outfit; they do not establish that the separate tear later reported at the slit was intentional.
What was reported about a later tear?
Madame Figaro later reported that the gown tore at the slit as Cabello left the event, and that she used her handbag to cover the area while getting into a car. The report attributes those details to photos circulated by the Daily Mail and an unnamed source. It is a separate account from Cabello’s event-night explanation of the distressed hem; the available reporting does not confirm the tear’s precise timing, cause or repair, and no verified statement from Cabello or the designer explains it.

How the gown fit the 2024 Met Gala theme
The 2024 Costume Institute exhibition was “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” and the dress code was “The Garden of Time.” Madame Figaro identifies the dress-code reference as J. G. Ballard’s 1962 short story. Cabello’s comments about impermanence, decay and melting aligned with the look’s evocation of time passing.
Vogue described the dress as weighing 15 pounds, taking over 450 hours to make and featuring 250,000 Swarovski crystals. Those figures are reported by Vogue; they are not independently measured figures.

The ice purse was a different mishap
Cabello also arrived with a rose encased in an ice-block purse, a separate accessory from the gown. She told Extra that it broke about five minutes after she entered the line. After calling her stylist, she carried it as a clutch; the ice melted during the event, leaving the rose. Us Weekly reports that Cabello linked the rose to the gala invitation, while Vogue described the ice block as an allusion to time and ephemerality.
