Boola Djarat Wardan was a free light-and-laser installation presented at Hillarys Boat Harbour as part of Joondalup Festival 2023. Its name means “many lights across the sea,” and the experience combined digital laser light, water effects and sound. The advertised run was 13 March to 2 April 2023; it is a past event, not a current or upcoming show.
What was Boola Djarat Wardan?
Created by LASERVISION, Boola Djarat Wardan transformed Hillarys Boat Harbour with digital laser light technology, water haze, geysers and an enveloping soundscape. LASERVISION gives the name’s meaning as “many lights across the sea.” The City of Joondalup lists the installation among the lights-and-lasers experiences that transformed the harbour for its 2023 festival.
The work was designed as a place-specific sensory experience rather than a conventional stage performance. Its mix of projected light, water and sound made the harbour itself part of the setting.
When did it take place, and was it free?
LASERVISION’s 28 February 2023 event announcement advertised nightly presentations from 13 March through 2 April 2023, with free admission. Those dates have passed; the announcement does not establish a future return.

Who contributed to the storytelling?
LASERVISION says South West Kinships Cultural Immersions contributed artistic input and storytelling to the project. That is the extent of the contribution described in the available project account; it does not establish further details about cultural protocols or community consensus.
Joondalup Mayor Albert Jacob described the festival as bringing “world-class experiences” to the area and commissioning new works “with stories of this place,” saying the City was thrilled to share this story at Hillarys Boat Harbour. The statement appears on LASERVISION’s project page.

How long was the experience?
Published descriptions do not establish a single reliable runtime. PerthNow’s March 2023 event coverage describes a “three-hour journey,” while its September 2023 festival report calls Boola Djarat Wardan a seven-minute show. Neither account explains whether the figures refer to an evening-long experience or one cycle of the installation, so neither duration should be treated as definitive.

The City of Joondalup’s 2022–23 annual report says a social media post promoting the installation reached 66,993 people and received 1,129 reactions, 459 comments and 165 shares. Those are post-reach and engagement figures, not an attendance count.

Separately, September 2023 council minutes describe “hundreds of thousands” of people from across the state as having enjoyed the show. This is a rounded description, not a precise audited attendance figure. PerthNow reported more than 50 shows and more than 300 artists and creatives for the wider Joondalup Festival; those figures describe the festival program, not Boola Djarat Wardan alone.
