The “400th” label is a franchise-wide milestone used in the title’s framing; it is not confirmed by the official episode listing. The installment brings Kenpachi Zaraki and Mayuri Kurotsuchi face to face with Pernida Parnkgjas, and its unsettling visual approach may not work equally well for every viewer.
What happens in “BABY,HOLD YOUR HAND”?
As Kenpachi and Mayuri advance through Vier Ast toward Wahr Welt, Pernida Parnkgjas stops them. Kenpachi tries to overwhelm the opponent with a direct attack, but cannot land a decisive blow and is exposed to Pernida’s unusual assault. Mayuri watches the fight, analyzing its unexpected turns with visible excitement. The official episode synopsis establishes the encounter and its central contrast: Kenpachi’s force meets an opponent he cannot simply overpower, while Mayuri studies what is unfolding.

That setup gives the episode two different kinds of tension: the immediate danger to Kenpachi and the question of what Mayuri can learn from Pernida. The clash is not simply a contest of strength; its peculiar threat asks the characters—and the viewer—to adjust to unfamiliar rules.
Which episode is “Baby, Hold Your Hand”?
The official anime site identifies it as episode 34, titled “BABY,HOLD YOUR HAND.” VIZ also lists “Baby, Hold Your Hand” as episode 34 in Part 3, between “Gate of the Sun” (episode 33) and “Don’t Chase a Shadow” (episode 35). VIZ describes the Part 3 digital collection as covering episodes 27–40. VIZ’s listing is a useful guide to the installment’s placement; availability may vary by region and change over time.
#1 Best Overall
The “400th episode” phrasing refers to a reported franchise-wide count rather than this installment’s official episode number. A secondary recap calls it the franchise’s 400th anime episode, but the official listing and VIZ page do not establish that overall count. Treat it as the title’s milestone framing, not as the episode number shown by either listing.
Why might the episode fall short of perfection?
“Falls short of perfection” is a critical judgment, not an objective rating. A secondary recap reports that CBR scored the episode 8/10, praising its animation and direction while relaying criticism of CGI rendering and the fight’s perceived imbalance. The same recap says some reviewers regarded Pernida’s unusual design as an effective body-horror choice. Those are reports from one recap, not a verified consensus or independently checked quotations from the original reviews. The recap’s discussion supports describing a divide in reaction, not claiming that viewers broadly agree.
Rank #2
The most useful way to assess the episode is to separate execution from taste. A strange, unnerving opponent can serve the story’s body-horror edge, but the visual treatment must still make the action legible and compelling. Likewise, Kenpachi’s inability to secure an immediate victory can create suspense, yet a fight that feels too one-sided may blunt its momentum. Those are the relevant tests for the CGI, pacing, and balance—not proof that the episode succeeds or fails for every viewer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Was the CGI in the Pernida fight effective?
The available reception account reports criticism of the CGI rendering, but it does not establish a universal reaction or provide a verified primary review passage. The visual choice is best considered in context: Pernida’s design and behavior are meant to feel unfamiliar, so a less conventional appearance may reinforce the confrontation’s unsettling character. At the same time, if the rendering draws attention away from the danger or makes movement feel less integrated, it can weaken the fight for viewers who value visual continuity.
Rank #3
That tension explains how the same element can be a deliberate horror effect for one viewer and a distraction for another. The evidence supports presenting it as a point of debate, not declaring the CGI objectively bad or universally effective.
