What does Bloodborne’s rating mean?
The ESRB rates Bloodborne, a PlayStation 4 game, M (Mature 17+) for Blood and Gore and Violence. Its rating summary describes combat using weapons such as cleavers, axes and pistols against monsters and human-like creatures. It also identifies realistic gunfire and impacts, large blood-splatter effects, and scenes involving severed body parts and beheading. These are central elements of the game’s violent horror, not incidental content.

PlayStation describes a horror-filled gothic city populated by deranged mobs and nightmarish creatures, and lists Blood and Gore and Violence in its US product-page content notices.
Is it appropriate for your child?
The M 17+ classification is the official US rating, not an individualized prediction of how a particular child will respond. Consider the child’s age, comfort with graphic violence and horror imagery, and your own judgment as a caregiver. If you are unsure, read the ESRB’s content summary or preview gameplay before allowing play.

Outside the United States, check the rating used in your region. The ESRB classification should not be treated as a universal age rating.
What should parents know about online play?
The ESRB states that online interactions are not rated. That means its content rating does not assess the conduct or communication a player might encounter from others online. PlayStation’s product listing identifies online play as optional, so parents can factor supervision and account or communication settings into their decision.
