Camila Alves McConaughey has said she was from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, and that she first went to Los Angeles at 15 to visit an aunt. In her account, the visit—not a preplanned modeling career—set events in motion: her aunt introduced her to a modeling agency, while Alves worked cleaning houses and in restaurants as she learned English. The exact place where she was born is reported differently by biographical sources.
Where is Camila Alves from?
In a 2007 interview with CARAS Brasil, Alves said, “Sou de Belo Horizonte e fui visitar uma tia em Los Angeles quando tinha 15 anos.” (“I’m from Belo Horizonte and went to visit an aunt in Los Angeles when I was 15.”) That is her own description of where she is from and how her trip to the United States began.
Her precise birthplace is less certain in published accounts. A 2011 profile in Revista Encontro identifies Belo Horizonte as her birthplace and says she grew up in the city’s Cidade Nova neighborhood. Other biographical summaries identify Itambacuri, in Minas Gerais. The available accounts do not resolve the discrepancy, so it is safest to distinguish Alves’s statement that she is from Belo Horizonte from claims about her exact place of birth.
How did she move to the United States and start modeling?
Alves described her trip to Los Angeles as a visit to her aunt when she was 15. Her aunt connected her with a modeling agency, but Alves said she had not imagined modeling as a career: “Não sonhava com isso” (“I didn’t dream of that”), she told CARAS Brasil.

Her account also includes the practical work that came before a public career. She said she cleaned houses, attended public school, learned English, and later worked first as a restaurant receptionist and then as a waitress. These details make her early story more than a sudden discovery by a modeling agency: it was also a period of adapting to a new country and supporting herself.
A later Good Morning America report summarized her departure from Brazil at 15 as a move to pursue modeling. That framing is broader than Alves’s first-person account of initially visiting family and encountering modeling through her aunt.

How has Brazil shaped her identity and style?
Alves has described her style as shaped by several places rather than by Brazil alone. Asked in a 2013 Los Angeles Times interview whether her laid-back style came from Brazil or California, she answered, “You know, it’s a combination of Brazil, New York and L.A.” She also said she grew up around artists and that her mother had been an artist for more than 30 years at the time.
This is Alves’s description of her own influences, not a formula for Brazilian identity or style. A 2018 Feeding America interview introduces her as born and raised in Brazil in a family of farmers and connects that upbringing with food and charity. Together, these accounts describe different parts of her background: family and early life in Brazil, followed by experiences in New York and Los Angeles.

Did Camila Alves become a U.S. citizen?
Yes. In August 2015, Alves announced that she had become a U.S. citizen. Good Morning America quoted her announcement: “It is with great pride and honor that I am happy to say I now hold an American passport!” The milestone adds context to her life in the United States, but her account of her Brazilian background begins with her own connection to Belo Horizonte and her move there as a teenager.
