The report also said a Nine spokeswoman dismissed that claim. The explanation attributed to Nine and Williams instead focused on his health and family. The clash allegation was disputed reporting, not an established cause.
What was the theory behind Cameron Williams’ abrupt exit?
PerthNow reported on 26 March 2022 that “new reports” linked Williams’s departure to an alleged heated exchange with Simon Hobbs, Nine’s Sydney news director. The story described the exchange as having occurred three to four weeks earlier and attributed the account to sources. It also said a Nine spokeswoman dismissed the claim. Read PerthNow’s report.

That account should be treated as an allegation that Nine reportedly rejected—not as a confirmed explanation for Williams’s resignation. The underlying reporting and a direct Nine statement are not available here to establish what happened beyond PerthNow’s account.
What reasons did Nine and Williams give?
PerthNow reproduced an internal staff message attributed to Nine director of news Darren Wick, saying Williams had resigned from his role as an on-air sports presenter. Wick’s reported message said Williams was leaving to focus on his health and then pursue other opportunities. It identified 21 March 2022 as his last day. These are statements quoted by PerthNow and attributed to Wick, rather than independently reviewed internal documents.

PerthNow also reproduced a resignation message attributed to Williams. He wrote that he had decided to resign and had “struggled for years with increasingly poor health,” adding that he wanted to address it “for the sake of a more important team, my family.” His message, as quoted in the article, supplies the clearest personal reason publicly attributed to him.
How do the two accounts compare?
| Account | What PerthNow reported | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Alleged exchange with Simon Hobbs | Sources reportedly linked the departure to a heated exchange three to four weeks earlier. | Allegation; PerthNow said a Nine spokeswoman dismissed it. The underlying source reporting is not independently available here. |
| Health and family | A message attributed to Darren Wick said Williams was leaving to focus on health and pursue opportunities; a resignation message attributed to Williams cited years of poor health and his family. | Statements reproduced by PerthNow, not independently inspected primary messages. |
What else was reported about the departure?
PerthNow said Williams had recently signed a three-year deal, had been off air for almost a month, and had returned to Nine in December 2016 after leaving earlier that year. Those details provide context for the abrupt timing, but do not resolve the disagreement over the reason for his exit.
