What sentence did Kohberger receive?
Kohberger pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree murder and one felony burglary count. Under the plea agreement, prosecutors agreed not to seek the death penalty, and the terms called for maximum sentences on each count to run consecutively. Court TV/Scripps News Boise reported the plea terms; the Idaho Attorney General’s office announced the sentence.
| Count | Sentence | How it runs |
|---|---|---|
| Four first-degree murder counts | Four fixed life sentences | Consecutively |
| One felony burglary count | 10 years | Consecutively, after the murder sentences |
The Idaho Attorney General’s office explains that fixed prison sentences under Idaho law do not carry parole eligibility. Its account of the sentence is an official statement from the office, not a substitute for the court’s sentencing record.

What happened in court?
Families and others affected by the crimes delivered victim impact statements, according to the Idaho Statesman’s live report. The paper also reported that Kohberger declined to make a statement. Courtroom details and quotations below are attributed to that contemporaneous coverage rather than presented as independently verified transcript text.
Judge Steven Hippler, as quoted by the Idaho Statesman: “Who committed this unspeakable evil was unknown for several weeks, but due to the killer’s incompetence and outstanding police work by numerous local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, the person that slithered through that sliding glass door at 1122 King Road now stands before the world and this court unmasked.”

In its July 23, 2025 statement, Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador said: “While no sentence can bring full justice to this kind of evil, today’s sentence ensures that Bryan Kohberger will never see the outside of a prison and will never again harm innocent families.” This was the attorney general’s statement, not a judicial finding.

The sentencing did not resolve a later effort to challenge the plea. The Associated Press reported on August 26, 2026, that a judge had not granted Kohberger an evidentiary hearing on his plea challenge and had reserved a June 2027 date in case such a hearing is warranted. That date was conditional, not a scheduled hearing certain to occur. The AP report describes the court’s scheduling status.
Claims in Kohberger’s plea-withdrawal petition remain allegations, not court findings. The AP’s July 27, 2026 report described the petition’s claims; it did not report that the plea had been withdrawn. Read the AP account of the petition.
