Springsteen criticized the U.S. administration from the stage; two days later, Trump responded on Truth Social with a personal and political attack on the musician. The exchange was a concert speech followed by a social-media post—not a formal debate or government proceeding.
What did Bruce Springsteen say about Trump?
Springsteen and the E Street Band opened the Land of Hope & Dreams Tour in Manchester, England, on May 14, 2025. Springsteen’s official site says he made three statements about the situation in the United States before performances of “Land of Hope and Dreams,” “House of a Thousand Guitars” and “My City of Ruins.”

In remarks reported from the concert, Springsteen said: “The America I love, the America I’ve written about that has been a beacon of hope and liberty for 250 years is currently in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent and treasonous administration.” The words “corrupt, incompetent and treasonous” were Springsteen’s political characterization of the administration, not an independently established legal or factual finding. Springsteen’s May 14 announcement records the setting and three statements; the Associated Press report published May 16 reproduces the excerpt.
How did Donald Trump respond?
On May 16, 2025, Trump responded publicly in a Truth Social post, criticizing Springsteen’s music and politics, according to the Associated Press. AP reported that Trump told the musician to “KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT” until he returned to the country. That was Trump’s wording in the post as quoted by AP; it does not establish any legal action.

Timeline of the documented exchange
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| May 14, 2025 | Springsteen and the E Street Band opened the Land of Hope & Dreams Tour in Manchester. Springsteen made three statements about the U.S. situation during the concert, according to his official site. |
| May 16, 2025 | Trump criticized Springsteen in a Truth Social post, including the instruction “KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT,” as reported by AP. |
The exchange unfolded in a live music setting, not at a campaign event or government proceeding. Springsteen’s official tour announcement listed 16 planned dates across six countries and estimated an audience of more than 700,000 fans. That was a projected reach in the announcement, not a verified final attendance count. The tour announcement describes its planned scale.
Why did Trump attack Springsteen?
The documented immediate context is Springsteen’s May 14 criticism of the administration; Trump’s public response followed two days later. AP reported that Trump criticized both Springsteen’s politics and his music. That sequence supports describing the post as a response to Springsteen’s remarks, but it does not establish Trump’s private motives or settle the merits of either man’s political claims.

What the “battle” does—and does not—refer to
In this documented episode, “battle” means a public political dispute: a musician criticized the administration during a concert, and the president responded on social media. The available sources establish that exchange, not a complete chronology of every later interaction through October 8, 2026. Springsteen’s official site announced a 2026 Land of Hope and Dreams American Tour and recapped a live EP from the 2025 Manchester opening, but those later music activities do not by themselves establish further exchanges with Trump. Springsteen’s 2026 announcement provides that later tour and EP context.
There is also a related but separate political initiative: Rolling Stone Australia reported on March 23, 2026, that ACLU executive director Anthony D. Romero discussed an ACLU video using Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.” in a campaign concerning birthright citizenship. That advocacy is not evidence about Trump’s May 2025 response. The interview with Romero covers the campaign and its legal advocacy.
