In Sayari Debnath’s review for Scroll.in, Andrew Miller’s The Land in Winter succeeds most strongly as an evocation of the brutal winter of 1962–63, but its four central characters remain too emotionally remote for the novel’s shared ordeal to fully engage her. That is a personal critical response, not a verdict shared by every reader: Booker judges and other critics praised the novel’s atmosphere and emotional nuance.
What is The Land in Winter about?
Andrew Miller’s novel, published by Sceptre on 24 October 2024, opens in December 1962 in England’s West Country. It follows two neighboring couples: local doctor Eric Parry and his pregnant wife Irene, and Bill Simmons, who is trying to establish a small dairy farm, and his pregnant wife Rita. As severe weather and blizzards isolate the community, pressure builds in the couples’ private lives as well as their marriages.
The book’s unusual premise is the collision of an extreme winter with ordinary domestic and rural pressures. The snow is not simply scenery: confinement intensifies the characters’ tensions. Irene and Rita form a friendship, while their husbands struggle with their own circumstances. Miller has said the novel began with “An anecdote of my mother’s that rattled around in my head for many years,” as quoted in the Booker Prize Foundation’s reading guide.
What does Debnath admire about the novel?
For Debnath, the setting is the book’s clearest strength. Her review, published 1 November 2025, praises the physical force of Miller’s winter: his descriptions of the cold make warmth feel urgently desirable. She also highlights the precise attention to farm labor and to the intimate details of kitchens and bedrooms.

That close observation gives the novel a convincing sense of place and daily life. Debnath sees an isolated, harsh England before the social changes associated with the swinging sixties; the weather’s severity makes that isolation tangible.
Why does the review find it hard to engage?
The difficulty, in Debnath’s account, is not a lack of atmosphere but a lack of emotional connection to the people living through it. She describes reading slowly and rereading without becoming invested in the Parrys and Simmonses as couples. The four characters, she feels, remain emotionally distant from one another, so the storm does not consistently bind their separate stories into a compelling shared ordeal.

Two strands hold more interest for her: the friendship between Irene and Rita, which she finds charming, and Bill’s personal story, which she finds more arresting. Her response is captured by the review’s headline: the novel presents an appealing idea, but struggles to engage this reader. Debnath also uses “boring” to describe her experience and expresses uncertainty after 400 pages. Those are her judgments and language, not evidence of a general reader consensus.
How does this response compare with other critical views?
The Booker Prize Foundation’s judges offered a more affirmative reading. They described a story of two pregnant neighbors and their husbands whose lives are unsettled by a storm, praising its atmosphere, suspense, and mystery. The Foundation’s reading guide also records positive responses from Martin Chilton, Rachel Seiffert, and Lucy Scholes, who emphasize qualities including the ending, emotional nuance, and attention to interior lives.

The contrast is useful rather than conclusive. Debnath’s central reservation is that the relationships do not create enough emotional involvement for her; the judges and selected critics found qualities in the novel’s atmosphere and emotional presentation to praise. These sources show differing critical responses, not a representative poll or a measurable consensus.
Was The Land in Winter the 2025 Booker Prize winner?
No. It was shortlisted for the 2025 Booker Prize; David Szalay’s Flesh won. The Foundation says the judges considered 153 books for that prize year. That figure describes the judging process, not the novel’s popularity or readership. The Foundation lists eligibility as long-form fiction written in English and published in the UK and/or Ireland between 1 October 2024 and 30 September 2025.

Readers drawn to carefully rendered weather, rural work, domestic detail, and the pressure an isolated setting places on relationships may find the novel’s strengths compelling. Readers who need an immediate emotional bond with a group of characters may be more sympathetic to Debnath’s reservation: for her, the atmospheric achievement did not make the central couples’ ordeal involving enough.
