But Bowen Yang did not name Musk when he first recounted the incident in 2024: Fineman identified him in her own account months later.
What Bowen Yang said about the SNL host
On Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Yang was asked about the worst behavior he had seen from an Saturday Night Live host. In an interview reported by Entertainment Tonight on August 13, 2024, after the August 11 broadcast, Yang described an unnamed host who disliked the ideas presented for the show.
Entertainment Tonight transcribed Yang as saying: “This man who– this person, this host, made multiple cast members cry on Wednesday, before the table read,” because the host “hated the ideas.” Yang called the experience “terrible.” Entertainment Tonight’s report
Did Yang name Elon Musk?
No. In his original public account, Yang did not identify the host. TheWrap’s August 13 report noted that Matt Rogers offered the hint, “He’s got new PR and everything,” but that was a clue, not confirmation of the person’s identity. TheWrap’s report
Yang later discussed the strain of writing late and receiving blunt negative feedback in a September 2024 Fly on the Wall follow-up. Us Weekly reported that Yang clarified he was not saying he personally was the one who cried. Us Weekly’s report
How Chloe Fineman identified the host
In November 2024, Chloe Fineman identified Elon Musk in a TikTok video that was later deleted. The Daily Beast reported on Fineman’s account and said The Hollywood Reporter had reviewed the video before it was removed. Fineman said she was the cast member Musk made cry after she stayed up writing a sketch. She recounted him telling her, “It’s not funny.” The Daily Beast’s report

A 2025 Daily Beast interview with former cast member Beck Bennett also discussed Musk’s May 8, 2021 hosting week and described harsh criticism and cast members crying. The Daily Beast’s interview A 2026 Parade recap likewise reports Fineman’s identification. Parade’s recap
Taken together, these accounts support identifying Musk as the host associated with the incident. The distinction matters: Yang’s initial story concerned an unnamed host and multiple cast members, while Fineman later named Musk and described her own reaction. The available reporting does not independently establish the exact number of people affected.
