Sudha Murty and N. R. Narayana Murthy planned a modest 1978 wedding costing Rs 800 and agreed to pay for it equally. In Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s book excerpt published by Scroll, that shared expense was one expression of the equal partnership they wanted; Sudha also shaped parts of the ceremony and made choices about her name and the mangalsutra. Murty separately recalled the equal Rs 800 payment in a 2021 interview, corroborating that central detail.
What made the wedding “equal rights” oriented?
The account is an excerpt from Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s An Uncommon Love: The Early Life of Sudha and Narayana Murthy, published by Scroll on January 9, 2024, with permission from Juggernaut. It describes the couple’s decisions; it is not an independent investigation of every detail of the ceremony. Read the Scroll excerpt.
According to the excerpt, the couple estimated that the wedding could be held for Rs 800 and decided to divide the cost equally. The author says they saw the arrangement as a symbol of the equal partnership they envisioned. In a 2021 interview with The Telegraph India, Murty also recalled, “We got married at home with Rs 800 paid equally by the two of us.” That recollection supports the shared-cost detail and the broad setting, but not every scene or exchange narrated in the book excerpt. When and where was the ceremony?
The excerpt places the wedding on February 10, 1978, at Murthy’s mother’s house in Bangalore. It says the ceremony began at 10:15 am and lasted thirty minutes; the gathering, including lunch, was over by noon. These precise timings and details come from Divakaruni’s account.

How did Sudha shape the ceremony?
The excerpt portrays Sudha as reviewing the planned Sanskrit verses and removing those she objected to. She also refused a ritual in which the bride’s father washed the groom’s feet. These are the book’s account of her choices, not evidence that the couple rejected every custom or that their approach represented Hindu weddings generally.
The mangalsutra compromise
Sudha initially rejected the mangalsutra. The book’s narration quotes her as saying, “No mangalsutra for me,” and describes her agreeing to wear it after her mother-in-law expressed concern. After returning to Pune, Sudha put it away. The account presents a negotiation and compromise, rather than a simple rejection of tradition.

Choosing “Murty”
The excerpt says Sudha chose the spelling “Murty,” which she considered closer to the original Sanskrit pronunciation, and that Narayana Murthy accepted her choice. This is the reason given in the book’s account, not an independently established linguistic ruling.
What happened to the Rs 4,200 debt?
At the end of the wedding account, Sudha tears up a notebook in which she had recorded Rs 4,200 that Narayana Murthy had borrowed from her. This detail is reported in the Scroll excerpt; the Telegraph interview does not independently corroborate it.

What the account establishes—and what it does not
The story is about the choices of one couple, as narrated by a biographer and partly echoed in Murty’s later recollection. The two sources are not contemporaneous wedding records, and the excerpt’s ceremony details should be read as the biographer’s account. Together, they do not establish how common such arrangements were among Indian couples or Hindu weddings.
An Uncommon Love is the larger biography from which the Scroll passage is excerpted; the wedding story is one part of that book.
