Bob Dylan reportedly turned down an invitation to present and perform at the 2025 Oscars. The explanation made public came from Mick Jagger, who said Dylan suggested the Academy find someone younger; it was Jagger recounting their exchange, not a direct statement from Dylan.
What was Bob Dylan invited to do?
A Rolling Stone report published March 4, 2025, citing The Hollywood Reporter for the invitation detail, said the Academy asked Dylan to present and perform at the 97th Academy Awards. The report does not establish that Dylan publicly addressed the invitation himself.

What reason was given for his refusal?
While presenting the Best Original Song award at the ceremony, Mick Jagger said the producers had wanted Dylan to take part. Jagger recounted Dylan telling him, “You should find somebody younger,” and then joked that he was younger. That is the only explanation attributed to Dylan in the reporting; it does not establish a broader objection to the Academy or awards ceremonies.
What did the 2025 ceremony say about Dylan’s absence?
Host Conan O’Brien joked, “Dylan wanted to be here tonight, but not that badly.” The line was a joke, not an explanation from Dylan. The ceremony conversation also came amid attention for A Complete Unknown, the film in which Timothée Chalamet portrayed Dylan and earned a Best Actor nomination. The reporting does not establish that the film or its awards attention caused Dylan to decline.

How was this different from Dylan’s 2001 Oscars appearance?
Dylan did participate in the Oscars in 2001, but in a different way. The Academy’s official 2001 ceremony record lists “Things Have Changed,” from Wonder Boys, with music and lyrics by Bob Dylan, as the Original Song winner. ABC News reported that Dylan performed the song from Australia via satellite and accepted the award remotely. That earlier appearance is distinct from the later report that he declined an invitation to present and perform in 2025.
