Call Me Bae Review: A Glossy, Skin-Deep Coming-of-Age Story

Call Me Bae is breezy and self-aware when it plays as comedy, but its polished heiress-to-hustler premise gives the coming-of-age and newsroom drama less depth.

Call Me Bae is most convincing when it treats heiress Bella Chowdhary’s fall from privilege as a joke she is in on. Its playful, fashion-forward comedy gives Ananya Panday room to make Bae engaging; the coming-of-age story is less persuasive when it asks that glossy world to carry weightier newsroom and social themes. The result is light, sometimes sharp entertainment rather than a grounded account of starting over.

What is Call Me Bae about?

The eight-episode Hindi comedy-drama follows Bella “Bae” Chowdhary, a wealthy heiress whose circumstances change abruptly. She heads to Mumbai, makes friends, gets a newsroom job and pursues a story. The series frames the upheaval as an opportunity for reinvention and self-discovery. It premiered on Prime Video on 6 September 2024. Amazon India’s announcement described it as a journey from heiress to hustler; Prime Video’s season listing confirms eight episodes and a U/A 16+ rating.

The premise has an immediate comic tension: Bae may lose money and status, but she brings social fluency, a polished sense of style and the habits of her former life with her. That makes this less a conventional survival story than a comfort-comedy version of starting over. The interesting question is whether the series turns that contrast into a meaningful examination of privilege—or mostly uses it to freshen up a familiar makeover-and-romance setup.

Does the comedy work?

The show’s most reliable asset is its self-aware, parodical mode. Bae’s extravagance and adjustment to a less protected life are played with a light touch, and the series is at its liveliest when it lets the heroine’s confidence and absurdity generate the joke. Ananya Panday’s performance has been singled out for its enthusiasm in that comic register: Firstpost’s Vinamra Mathur gave the show 3/5 and praised her work, while Filmfare’s Rachit Gupta called it “not cerebral entertainment, but it is an intelligent comedy.”

That playfulness gives Bae energy, but it also establishes expectations. A show that sends up its heroine’s privilege can be enjoyable without pretending to be a realist drama. The limitation is that a polished, aspirational setting can soften the consequences of losing status. Bae’s predicament remains relative to the wealth she had before; the series’ premise invites that contrast, but the available critical responses do not establish that it develops into a sustained class critique.

Does Bae’s coming-of-age arc deepen?

Amazon’s launch description presents the story as self-discovery through adversity. In practice, the key test is whether Bae’s new friendships and work change her outlook in ways the comedy has earned, rather than simply providing fresh settings for a stylish heroine. The show’s appeal lies in watching her adapt; its more serious claims are harder to accept when the world around her remains so glossy.

That gap is behind the “skin-deep” criticism. Scroll.in’s Udita Jhunjhunwala described the series as being “more about style and skin-deep dilemmas” in a review published on 17 September 2024. This is a pointed assessment of the show’s execution, not a reason to dismiss its subject or the viewers who enjoy its aspirational fantasy. The series can be fun precisely because it is light; the question is whether it offers enough change beneath the styling to make the coming-of-age label feel fully earned.

Does the newsroom drama fit the tone?

Bae’s arrival in Mumbai leads to a newsroom job and an investigation, moving the series beyond romance and social comedy. That shift asks the show to make its workplace and social concerns feel as credible as its frothy character comedy. Prime Video’s episode summaries confirm that reporting becomes part of the plot, but the more serious turn has drawn reservations from critics.

The Indian Express’s Shubhra Gupta gave the show 2.5/5, writing that its self-aware exaggerations work “just enough” until it starts getting “too woke and serious.” Hindustan Times critic Devansh Sharma, reviewing it on 29 January 2025, described the tone as “unapologetically frothy, decidedly sanitized, yet progressively meaningful.” Read together, these responses point to the series’ central trade-off: the earnest material may broaden its ambitions, but it can feel less integrated than the comedy that surrounds it.

What did critics think overall?

Rotten Tomatoes listed a 64% Tomatometer from 11 critic reviews when accessed in 2026. That is a snapshot of a small set of reviews, not a universal verdict or a measure of audience response. The excerpts show a range of reactions, but a recurring dividing line is tonal consistency: critics more receptive to the show’s comic premise found pleasure in its performance and self-aware exaggeration, while more critical responses questioned how convincingly that mode could support its serious ambitions.

Is Call Me Bae worth watching?

Try it if you want a breezy, fashion-conscious comedy with romance, an aspirational Mumbai setting and a heroine who can laugh at herself. It is less suited to a viewer looking for grounded economic realism or a consistently weighty workplace drama. Its strongest case is as light entertainment with a playful lead; its weaker one is as a deep examination of class and reinvention.
