Caitlin Clark’s remarks about racial privilege were part of her TIME Athlete of the Year interview—not a response to Megyn Kelly. After Kelly publicly called the comments insincere, Clark was asked about the criticism at a TIME dinner the next day. She reiterated that she had earned her achievements and said uplifting Black women in the WNBA mattered to her.
What Caitlin Clark said in TIME
In a profile published December 10, 2024, TIME named Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark its 2024 Athlete of the Year. Discussing her success and the attention around women’s basketball, Clark held two points together: she had worked for and earned her accomplishments, and she recognized that being white brought privilege.
“I want to say I’ve earned every single thing, but as a white person, there is privilege,” Clark said in the interview. She also credited Black players’ contributions to the WNBA and argued for elevating them: “The more we can elevate Black women, that’s going to be a beautiful thing.” TIME’s profile placed those comments in the context of Clark’s career and the league’s history.
What Megyn Kelly objected to
Kelly criticized Clark’s comments on X and in commentary published on her website on December 12. As quoted by The Independent, Kelly called them “Condescending. Fake. Transparent. Sad.” Kelly characterized Clark’s remarks as an apology for being white. That was Kelly’s interpretation of Clark’s intent, not an established description of what Clark meant.

How Clark answered at the TIME dinner
On December 11, 2024, NBC Sports host Maria Taylor asked Clark about the criticism during a TIME dinner. Clark said she had earned what had happened in her career and recalled growing up as a fan of the league. She also returned to the importance of recognizing the Black women who had helped shape it.

“I know there has been so many amazing Black women that have been in this league — and continuing to uplift them is very important and that’s something I’m very aware of,” Clark said. She added, “One of my best skills is just blocking things out,” explaining that she focused on the views of loved ones, teammates, and coaches. The dinner remarks were a response to being asked about Kelly’s criticism; they did not change the fact that Clark’s original comments appeared in TIME the day before. The Independent reported the exchange, and CNN’s December 12 transcript includes a clip and panel discussion.
Why the remarks drew attention in 2024
The exchange came amid exceptional attention around Clark and women’s basketball. In its December 10, 2024 profile, TIME reported that the WNBA had more than 54 million unique viewers across national broadcasting platforms during the 2024 regular season. TIME also reported a 48% year-over-year increase in overall attendance, which reached its highest level in more than two decades, and a regular-season single-game attendance record of 20,711. Separately, TIME reported an average of 18.9 million viewers for the Iowa–South Carolina championship game.

Those are figures TIME reported for 2024, not measures of the December exchange itself. They help explain the heightened visibility around Clark’s season, but the central distinction in the dispute remains straightforward: Clark acknowledged both her own achievements and racial privilege while recognizing Black players’ contributions; Kelly judged the remarks to be insincere and apologetic; Clark then reiterated her respect for the league’s Black women when asked about that criticism.
