“APT.” is pronounced “ap-a-teu,” a rendering of apateu (아파트), the Korean pronunciation of “apartment.” ROSÉ built the song’s chant around a Korean party game she says she played with friends, then brought it into a studio session where Bruno Mars helped turn it into a flirtatious pop-rock track.
What does “APT.” mean, and how do you say it?
Official Charts explains that the title is pronounced as it sounds in the chorus: “ap-a-teu.” The word apateu (아파트) means “apartment” in Korean. In the song, the title points both to the word and to the chant associated with the apartment game.
That game is the starting point ROSÉ gives for the track. In a statement reproduced by Official Charts from her agency, The Black Label, she said: “APT. is actually my favorite Korean drinking game that I play with my friends back home.”
How does the Korean apartment game work?
There are variations, but Official Charts describes a version in which players stack their hands and take turns removing them from the bottom after a leader calls a number. The player whose turn corresponds to that number—or who repeats a number already called—takes a drink as a forfeit.

This is the version described by Official Charts, not a universal rulebook for every way the game is played.
How did a drinking-game chant become a song?
ROSÉ has described teaching the game to people during a studio session. The chant caught the crew’s attention, and she suggested they make a song from it. That account connects the track’s repeated, group-friendly hook to the game rather than to an unrelated phrase invented for the song.

Bruno Mars joined ROSÉ on the collaboration, which turns the game’s playful call-and-response energy into a flirtatious party song. Yonhap characterized its sound as blending punk-rock vibes with a 1990s R&B influence. “Pop-rock with punk-rock and ’90s R&B influences” is a useful description; “pop punk” alone can imply a narrower genre classification than the sources establish.

Apple Music’s single listing identifies one song with a two-minute runtime. For a physical listening or collecting option, the rosie CD is the album format, not a standalone “APT.” single; ROSÉ’s official store has also listed separate “APT.” CD singles and 7-inch vinyl, though stock may change.

Chart positions and view counts are time-bound milestones, not permanent measures. Official Charts records “APT.” reaching number 2 in the UK, with its first chart date on October 31, 2024. Its contemporary explainer said the track debuted at number 4 in the week of October 25 and climbed to number 2 the following week.

The video also drew rapid early attention. Korea.net reported that the video passed 25 million YouTube views in its first 24 hours. On October 23, 2024, it reported The Black Label’s figure of more than 100 million views in five days after the video’s October 18 pre-release; those are 2024 snapshots, not current view counts.
In a March 2026 release, Atlantic Records reported that “APT.” was IFPI’s biggest-selling global single of 2025 and Apple Music’s most globally streamed song of 2025. Atlantic also reported 19 weeks at number one on Billboard Global Excl. U.S. and 12 weeks at number one on Billboard Global 200. The label said the song won Song of the Year at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards and received three nominations at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards: Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. The Grammy claims are nominations, not wins.
