CM stands for “Chick Magnet,” CM Punk confirmed while testifying on June 1, 2018. The name traces back to an earlier tag team called The Chick Magnets.
What did CM Punk say “CM” stands for?
Contemporaneous reporting said Punk confirmed under oath that the initials stood for “Chick Magnet.” The explanation links the name to The Chick Magnets, an earlier tag team. No trial transcript or recording is cited in the available reports, so this is a reported account of his answer, not a verified verbatim quotation from the courtroom.
Why was Punk answering questions about his name under oath?
Punk testified in Chicago during the defamation case brought by WWE physician Chris Amann. The suit concerned statements Punk and Colt Cabana made on Cabana’s 2014 Art of Wrestling podcast. The initials came up during that testimony; available reporting does not establish that the court compelled Punk to give a particular answer.
Why did the answer attract attention?
Sports Illustrated reported that Punk had offered multiple playful explanations for “CM” over the years. Its examples included “C. Montgomery Burns,” “Cookie Monster,” “Crooked Moonsault” and “Charles Manson.” Those were jokes or alternate explanations, not evidence of the initials’ original meaning. Writer Dan Gartland characterized the running joke by writing, “CM Punk has spent more than a decade trolling everyone who asks what his initials stand for.”

What happened in the case afterward?
A June 6, 2018, retrospective by Sports Illustrated says a Cook County jury found for Punk and Cabana. That outcome is separate from the name explanation: the reports identify “Chick Magnet” as the meaning Punk gave while testifying.
