Directed by Bong Joon Ho and starring Robert Pattinson, the 2025 film adapts Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey 7—though the movie’s title points to a different numbered iteration. That premise gives the film its offbeat hook, but the studio’s official synopsis is the basis for what can be said about its story without adding unsourced plot details.
What is Mickey 17 about?
Warner Bros. describes Mickey Barnes, played by Robert Pattinson, as an unlikely hero who works for an employer demanding the ultimate commitment: “to die, for a living.” That is the film’s central setup. Calling Mickey a “clone” is a handy shorthand, but the studio’s framing is more specific: he is an employee whose job requires him to die.

Is Mickey 17 based on a book?
Yes. The film is based on Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey 7. The book and movie therefore share a source, but their titles differ: Ashton’s novel is Mickey 7, while the film is Mickey 17. The official adaptation information establishes that relationship but does not explain why the film’s number changed, so a specific reason should not be assumed. Warner Bros. film page
