This is an editorial ranking, not an official canon list or a representative fan poll. The order weighs each character’s narrative importance, development, distinctiveness, and influence on the story; readers who prioritize humor, emotional impact, design, or screen presence may rank them differently.
Set in late-19th-century Great Britain, Black Butler centers on the partnership between Sebastian Michaelis, the Phantomhive household’s butler, and his young master, Ciel Phantomhive. In the Public School Arc, Ciel works as the Queen’s Watchdog and investigates missing students at Weston College with Sebastian. That central pairing provides a natural measure for this list: how much each character shapes the story or reveals something new about its relationships and world. The official profiles support the characters’ roles; the placements below are editorial judgments.
Character-role details are drawn from the official English character profiles, the official series introduction, and the Public School Arc official page.
Who are the 10 best characters in Black Butler?
-
Sebastian Michaelis
Sebastian earns the top spot because the series’ premise depends on the tension he embodies: he is an impeccably capable butler whose supernatural nature makes his service to Ciel more than ordinary loyalty. The official introduction presents him as refined and highly skilled in cooking and martial arts. His composure and competence make him indispensable to Ciel’s work, while the contrast between polished service and something far less human gives the central partnership its distinctive edge.

-
Ciel Phantomhive
Ciel is the story’s human center: a young head of the Phantomhive family who directs Sebastian and carries responsibilities that reach beyond the household. His Queen’s Watchdog role, highlighted in the Public School Arc premise, gives the pair a wider investigative purpose. Ciel’s position combines authority with vulnerability, making his decisions consequential without reducing him to a simple master issuing orders.
-
Undertaker
Undertaker stands out because he brings mystery and tonal unpredictability into the story. The official profile describes him as an information provider and an acquaintance of Ciel who asks clients for “supreme laughter” instead of money. That strange arrangement makes him memorable on personality alone, while his connection to the series’ mysteries gives his eccentricity narrative weight.

-
Grell Sutcliff
Grell’s theatrical manner makes a vivid contrast with the restraint associated with the Phantomhive household. The official profile identifies Grell as Madam Red’s butler and a Grim Reaper—a combination that immediately signals a role beyond conventional domestic service. Grell ranks highly for distinctiveness: the character’s bold presence brings a different energy to the series’ cast.
-
Elizabeth Midford
Elizabeth matters because her connection to Ciel carries personal stakes into the story. She is his cousin and fiancée, but that relationship alone is not the reason for her placement: the character’s significance lies in the choices and development she brings to that position. She adds an intimate dimension to a narrative otherwise often driven by Ciel’s duties, schemes, and investigations.

Finnian
Finnian’s cheerful, friendly manner is paired with superhuman strength, according to the official profile. That contrast makes him useful to the household in more than one register: he can contribute warmth and humor while also representing formidable physical capability. He gives the Phantomhive staff a distinctive presence beyond Sebastian’s near-flawless competence.
-
Mey-Rin
Mey-Rin’s official profile describes her as a klutz with extreme farsightedness and a distinctive accent. Those surface traits set up a gap between first impressions and what a reader may come to value in her as part of the household. Her place here reflects that potential for contrast, without treating a brief profile as proof of story developments it does not establish.

Baldroy
Baldroy, the household chef, is described in the official profile as consistently burning his cooking. His comic imperfection helps define the staff as a group rather than merely as extensions of Sebastian’s skill. In a household centered on a butler who appears able to do everything, Baldroy’s very different relationship with his job adds character and texture.
-
Soma Asman Kadar
Soma broadens the story’s perspective beyond the Phantomhive household. The official profile identifies him as the Prince of Bengal, traveling to Britain to retrieve his kidnapped wet nurse. His directness and outsider perspective distinguish him from the established household dynamic and bring another kind of purpose into the cast.

Agni
Agni completes the list as a capable, faithful butler whose partnership with Soma offers a useful point of comparison with Sebastian and Ciel. The official profile describes Agni as having impeccable character. That master-and-butler relationship helps show that loyalty and service can take a different shape from the central Phantomhive arrangement, even when the role of a butler remains important.
How this ranking differs from a popularity poll
This list ranks characters by editorial criteria, not by measured audience preference. No official “best characters” order is established by the cited official pages, and a community poll is not the same as a representative survey. A preference ranking would need a dated poll with a clear sample and method. Readers may reasonably put a character higher for humor, emotional impact, design, or screen presence—qualities this ranking does not treat as its primary measures.
Where to start if you want more of the story
The franchise began as Yana Toboso’s manga, and print volumes offer a way to follow the source story. Yen Press’s catalog lists Black Butler Volume 20; that catalog listing does not establish current retailer stock, edition availability, or price. Reading the manga is an option, not a prerequisite for enjoying the characters discussed here.
The official Japanese series page reports more than 35 million cumulative copies worldwide, but the page supplies no publication year for that figure. It should be read as an undated cumulative total, not as a current annual sales statistic. See the official Public School Arc page.
