Black Butler -Public School Arc-, often labeled Season 4 on streaming platforms, was announced to begin airing in April 2024. The official anime portal revealed the window on December 14, 2023, alongside a welcome visual featuring Ciel Phantomhive, released to mark his birthday. Both dates are now historical: this is not an upcoming release announcement.
What “Black Butler Season 4” refers to
The title points to Black Butler -Public School Arc-. The official anime portal identifies the installment by its arc name, while streaming services may use season numbering that varies by platform. Aniplex also lists Public School Arc as a 2024 television anime. Using the arc name is the clearest way to distinguish it from later adaptations. (official anime portal; Aniplex listing)

When was Public School Arc announced to air?
On December 14, 2023, the official portal announced an April 2024 broadcast window for Public School Arc. The announcement specified the month, not a particular day. Aniplex’s listing likewise identifies it as a 2024 television anime without supplying a more precise date. (official anime portal; Aniplex listing)
What is in the new Ciel visual?
The portal released a welcome visual featuring Ciel Phantomhive on December 14, 2023, to commemorate his birthday. It was presented alongside an earlier welcome visual featuring Sebastian Michaelis. The image accompanied the release-window announcement; it was not a separate premiere-date notice. (official anime portal)

How the announcement fits the anime timeline
The franchise’s later Emerald Witch Arc is a separate continuation, not another name for Public School Arc. Its April 2025 window was reported by Crunchyroll in December 2024. The announcements therefore refer to different arcs and different years:
| Arc | Announcement and release window | News attached to the announcement |
|---|---|---|
| Public School Arc | Official portal announcement, December 14, 2023; April 2024 broadcast window. | Ciel Phantomhive welcome visual released for his birthday, alongside an earlier Sebastian Michaelis visual. (official anime portal) |
| Emerald Witch Arc | Reported by Crunchyroll on December 8, 2024; April 2025 window. | Teaser visual and cast additions Chikahiro Kobayashi as Wolfram Gelzer and Rie Kugimiya as Sieglinde Sullivan; Crunchyroll reported it would stream the continuation. (Crunchyroll announcement coverage) |
Crunchyroll later reported that the English dub of Emerald Witch Arc would begin streaming on April 19, 2025. That dub date applies to the later arc, not the 2024 Public School Arc announcement. (Crunchyroll English-dub announcement)

The official series announcement describes the anime as an adaptation of Yana Toboso’s Black Butler manga. It called the 2024 series the franchise’s sixth anime adaptation and reported that cumulative circulation had exceeded 34 million copies at that time. That figure is the official portal’s July 4, 2023 statement, not a current circulation total. Readers interested in the source material can look for Yana Toboso’s Black Butler manga; the cited announcement does not establish which volume range the Public School Arc adapts.
