Spears called the memoir’s account “white lies,” adding, “they are going straight to the bank and I’m the only one who genuinely gets hurt here,” as quoted by the Associated Press. She also objected to tabloid coverage of her mental health and drinking. These were Spears’s responses to claims about her; they do not independently resolve what happened.
What were Kevin Federline’s allegations?
Excerpts from Federline’s memoir described claims about Spears’s conduct during their relationship and around their sons. One widely reported allegation was that the boys awoke at night to find Spears by a doorway holding a knife. That is an allegation attributed to Federline’s memoir, not an independently established event.

Federline told the Associated Press that concern for his sons was one reason he had delayed sharing his story, and that he was doing so when they were adults. He said, “I want my children to be able to move forward in their lives and know that the actual truth of everything is out there.” AP reported that the sons were 20 and 19 at the time, in October 2025.
Reports on the exchange attribute the central disputed behavioral claims to Federline and do not independently corroborate them. Spears disputed his portrayal. The two accounts should therefore be read as competing statements, not as a verified finding about the family.

Spears said one son had seen her for 45 minutes in the previous five years and that the other had visited four times during that period. She said she would let her sons know when she was available.
When does You Thought You Knew come out?
Federline’s memoir was scheduled for release on October 21, 2025, according to the Associated Press and The Independent. Spears’s response came five days earlier, on October 16. Spears had published her memoir, The Woman in Me, in 2023; The Guardian notes that it included her perspective on the custody battle.

Family background
Spears and Federline married in 2004 and divorced in 2007. They have two sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James. Spears’s conservatorship began in 2008 and ended in 2021, according to the reporting; that legal history forms part of the wider context but does not establish the truth of the memoir’s disputed claims.
For further context, the relevant books are Federline’s You Thought You Knew and Spears’s The Woman in Me. Reading either memoir offers its author’s account, not independent proof of contested events.
