The remarks came a day after a separate controversy over comments about the Matildas, which had already led Sheargold and the station to agree to part ways. A later apology from Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) to Endometriosis Australia’s chair addressed the endometriosis comments; the regulator’s subsequent finding concerned the Matildas segment, not the endometriosis remarks.
What Marty Sheargold said about endometriosis
On the Tuesday program, Sheargold was discussing a heat pack that a female producer had lent him for his sore back. He complained that women “carry on,” then said: “Honestly, endometriosis, and this is controversial” and “It’s made up.” A co-host urged him not to continue before he did. PerthNow reported the remarks on February 26, 2025. The quoted words are excerpts reported by the outlet, rather than an independently reviewed broadcast transcript.
Why Bridget Hustwaite called for his removal
Hustwaite described the claim as medically inaccurate and dismissive of people’s real pain. She told PerthNow: “He should be removed from the airwaves.” She also urged her Instagram followers to submit a formal complaint.
In her statement, Hustwaite said: “To date, no apology has been issued for these harmful comments, and given their inadequate response to his earlier remarks about the Matildas, I’m not holding my breath.” That reflected the position when her statement was reported by PerthNow on February 26.

How the two controversies unfolded
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| February 24, 2025 | Sheargold made controversial comments about the Matildas on air, including comparing the team to “Year 10 girls” and saying he would rather hammer a nail through his penis than watch them play. |
| February 26, 2025 | Sheargold and Triple M announced they had mutually agreed to part ways following the Matildas controversy; his show did not air that afternoon. His apology in that dispute said: “I fully understand the gravity of my comments. I’d like to sincerely apologise to the Matildas and the broader organisation.” It was an apology about the Matildas comments, not the endometriosis remarks. |
| The following day’s show | Sheargold made the endometriosis remarks while discussing the heat pack. Hustwaite’s call for his removal was a response to those remarks. |
| February 28, 2025 | ABC News reported that SCA chief operating officer had phoned Monica Forlano, Endometriosis Australia’s chair, to apologise. |
| September 11, 2025 | ABC News reported ACMA’s finding that Triple M breached the Commercial Radio Code of Practice over the Matildas segment. The finding was not about the endometriosis remarks. |
ABC News reported the departure and the Matildas apology on February 26, 2025, and the later apology to Forlano in its February 28, 2025 report. The sequence explains why Hustwaite’s contemporaneous statement that there had been no apology for the endometriosis comments does not conflict with the later report of SCA’s apology.
What endometriosis is—and why the claim matters
Endometriosis is a chronic disease in which tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus. It can cause severe pain or infertility and other health complications. ABC News noted that it is scientifically recognized and acknowledged by leading health authorities, including the World Health Organization.

ABC News reported in 2025, attributing the figures to Endometriosis Australia, that more than 830,000 people—more than 14% of Australian girls, women and people assigned female at birth—live with endometriosis at some point in life. The article also reported that one in seven Australian women has the condition by age 49, and that the average time to diagnosis in Australia is 6.5 years. These are population-level figures reported by ABC, not a prediction for any individual.
Forlano told ABC News: “It’s disappointing that someone with a platform would make a joke about something as serious as endometriosis.” The report also quoted her saying that people with debilitating pain may present at emergency departments and be dismissed as drug seekers or told “it’s just your period, go home.” Brisbane obstetrician-gynaecologist Brad Robinson said dismissive rhetoric can make it harder for women to have their symptoms taken seriously. What ACMA found—and what it did not
ACMA’s September 2025 decision concerned Triple M’s broadcast of the Matildas segment. ABC News reported that the regulator found a breach of the Commercial Radio Code of Practice because the segment included derogatory language and sexist themes. ACMA described the remarks as having a “demeaning and sarcastic tone” and showing “a level of contempt and disdain for women’s sport, and more generally of women.” At the time of ABC’s report, the regulator was considering potential enforcement action.
ACMA member Carolyn Lidgerwood said: “Even if the comments were an extremely ill-judged attempt at humour, a reasonable listener would have found them offensive and to have crossed the line.” The finding does not establish an ACMA decision about the separate endometriosis remarks.
