Who was Brenton Wood?
Wood was the stage name of Alfred Jesse Smith, born July 26, 1941, in Shreveport, Louisiana. He grew up in San Pedro, near Los Angeles, and learned piano. His musical life developed in Southern California, where he moved from local groups to songwriting and a solo career. What was Brenton Wood’s biggest hit?
“The Oogum Boogum Song” was Wood’s signature hit. In 1967, it reached No. 34 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and No. 19 on its Top Selling R&B Singles chart, according to the Los Angeles Times obituary. Those are separate chart positions: the song’s R&B ranking was higher than its Hot 100 peak.
What inspired “The Oogum Boogum Song”?
Wood said the song drew on changing women’s fashions in the 1960s, including bell-bottom hip-huggers, high-heeled boots and hot pants. The Los Angeles Times quoted his explanation from a 2000 interview with the San Diego Union-Tribune.

What other songs did Brenton Wood sing?
“Gimme Little Sign” followed “The Oogum Boogum Song” and became another major success, reaching No. 9 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in 1967, as reported by the Los Angeles Times and NPR.
During his Double Shot period, Wood released eleven 45s and the studio albums Oogum Boogum and Baby You Got It. Concord’s artist catalog also lists The Very Best Of, Brenton Wood’s 18 Best and Rarities – The Double Shot / Whiz Years.

How did Brenton Wood’s career continue after his hits?
Wood’s career did not end with his chart peak. He later worked through his own labels, Prophesy Records and Mr. Wood Records, and continued performing for decades. Contemporary coverage describes an audience across Southern California’s Latino communities and appearances at festivals, cruises, weddings, quinceañeras and anniversary parties.
In a 2024 interview with NPR, while wrapping up his farewell tour, Wood credited the listeners who stayed with him: “They followed me, they have supported me, long after the records came off the charts.” That sustained connection helps explain why his live career endured well beyond the period when his singles were charting.

Why is “The Oogum Boogum Song” still familiar?
The song’s reach extended beyond its original release through film and television placements. Variety noted its appearances in The Umbrella Academy, Almost Famous and Don’t Worry Darling. Those placements introduced the track to later audiences while preserving its association with Wood’s 1960s sound.

Wood died at home in Moreno Valley, California, on January 3, 2025, aged 83. The Los Angeles Times and Variety reported natural causes, attributing that account to his manager and assistant, Manny Gallegos.
