How the wedding flash mob unfolded
After giving a reception speech at Market Hall, Shannon Patton began dancing as “Dancing Queen” played. Guests joined in successive groups, turning the moment into a coordinated performance. PEOPLE reported that all 160 guests eventually danced in sync.

The surprise was planned, not spontaneous. About a month before the wedding, Shannon secretly sent guests a tutorial video that explained the steps and when each group should join. Some members of the bridal party practiced on the wedding day while Tierney and Donald were away taking photos.
Why Shannon chose “Dancing Queen”
The song connected directly to Tierney’s love of Mamma Mia!, which PEOPLE described as her favorite movie. Her bachelorette party had also been themed around the musical. Shannon drew inspiration from it and choreographed some of the moves herself.

Tierney said ABBA and Mamma Mia! had “been woven into so many of my happiest memories in life,” making it especially meaningful that her mother choreographed a dance to “Dancing Queen.”
The couple’s reaction to the surprise
At first, Tierney and Donald were confused and thought Shannon’s dancing might be an awkward attempt to open the dance floor. Their brother stopped them from getting up to join her before the rest of the performance began to reveal itself.

As more groups stood and joined the dance, Tierney said, “I was screaming each time a different group stood up and joined!” Donald had long wanted to take part in a flash mob, but said, “I’ve always wanted to be a part of a flash mob. I never in a million years would have thought there would be one for me.”

A separate wedding flash mob circulated in 2024, featuring bride Katherine Martineau. In an ABC News video published September 19, 2024, guests surprised Martineau with “Dancing Queen” as she was preparing to throw her bouquet over a balcony. That event is unrelated to Patton and Applegate’s 2026 Raleigh wedding.
