Why Season 5’s costumes look familiar—and newly rooted in 1987
Netflix says Season 5 is set primarily in fall 1987. Costume designer Amy Parris drew on films from that year, including Some Kind of Wonderful, while returning to the show’s established visual language. Plaid, corduroy, recurring colors, and familiar silhouettes connect the new clothes to earlier seasons; period trends give them a fresh time-specific edge. Netflix also reports that brands including Nike, Benetton, Gap, Adidas, Guess, Minnetonka, and Woolrich collaborated with the production, including through archive access or custom pieces. That collaboration describes production support, not proof that the screen garments are available as retail replicas.
What is Eleven wearing in Season 5?
A training outfit built around movement
Eleven’s main training look combines red sweat shorts over gray sweatpants, a cropped zip-front hoodie, and a printed navy bandana. Parris explained the intention: “I wanted her outfits to feel like she is focused on being an athlete and training.” The layered athletic pieces make that focus visible rather than treating the outfit as a generic period costume.
Custom shoes inspired by a vintage Nike model
Netflix says Eleven’s shoes are a unique custom pair based on Nike’s Field General High, which Nike made between 1985 and 1987. The inspiration identifies the historical model behind the design; it does not mean the custom shoes themselves are a standard, currently available product.

Small costume details that reveal character and continuity
Robin’s shirt and jacket
Robin requested a Tom Waits shirt, leather jacket, and jeans as a nod to a real-life Winona Ryder photo. The shirt’s “Beam Me Up This Place Sucks” wording also suits Robin’s outsider sensibility and evokes 1980s science-fiction culture.
Holly’s bright “Heroic” look
Holly’s colorful “Heroic” costume was developed with the props department to match the figurine she receives. Its brightness also helps her stand out against Hawkins’ more muted surroundings.

Max’s patches carry a link to Henry Creel
The patches on Max’s jeans use fabric from a shirt worn by young Henry Creel in Season 4. An everyday clothing detail thus carries a direct material connection to an earlier part of the story.
Other callbacks in the group’s clothes
- Nancy: Her jeans use a specific Guess archive wash; Parris pushed to recreate the finish of the exact sample.
- Will: He returns to Adidas sneakers and the vest-over-hoodie layering associated with his earlier looks, including Season 1.
- Dustin: His trench coat has buffalo-check lining and multiple pockets, pairing the recognizable “trench coat kid” silhouette with practical details.
How the costume team maintained continuity
Costumes had to hold up across months of story time and repeated wear on screen. Netflix reports that main looks were made in multiple states, including clean, dirty, and bloody versions. The ager/dyer and breakdown team then distressed clothes and added script-specific blood, goo, or dirt so garments could match the scene and its continuity.

Vintage clothing posed a separate matching challenge. Parris found eight of Mike’s medallion sweaters; the team then had additional matching pieces rewoven and painted. That process helps explain why a seemingly ordinary repeated item can require substantial production work: a replacement has to match the original closely enough to cut between versions of a scene.

The sources describe custom production work, including Eleven’s unique shoes, but do not establish that exact Season 5 screen costumes are sold as replicas. A fan recreation can use generic red sweat shorts, gray sweatpants, a cropped zip hoodie, and a navy bandana to echo the outfit’s colors and layers. Treat those as approximate substitutes, not officially licensed or exact costume pieces.
