The April 22, 2024 trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine centers on an uneasy team-up: Wade Wilson needs a reluctant Wolverine to help save his homeworld. Cassandra Nova is the clearest named antagonist in official coverage, while Mr. Paradox recruits Deadpool for a separate TVA-linked assignment. A brief shot also appears to show several returning mutants—but those background identifications are interpretations, not Marvel’s official character roster.
Who are the heroes in the trailer?
Deadpool and Wolverine are the central team
Marvel’s official synopsis says Wade Wilson has left his Deadpool days behind when he is drawn into a fight to save his homeworld. He must persuade a reluctant Wolverine to join him. That makes the pair the trailer’s central heroes, even if Wolverine does not initially welcome the partnership. Marvel’s official film page describes the premise.

The contrast is part of the setup: Deadpool needs Wolverine’s help, but the two are not presented as an instantly harmonious duo. Ryan Reynolds, who plays Deadpool, described their emotional difference this way: “He and Wolverine are more similar than different… The thing that they are running away from is shame, and they just both handle it in very different ways.” D23 published the comment in its July 24, 2024 feature.
Who is Cassandra Nova?
Cassandra Nova, played by Emma Corrin, is the most clearly identified antagonist in official film coverage. D23 describes her as effectively Charles Xavier’s evil twin sister and says the characters encounter her later in the film. Corrin also leaned into the character’s villain framing: “The term ‘villain’ is a great one, and we all know villains have the most fun.” D23’s character feature attributes that quote to Corrin.

The April 22 trailer includes a shot that a Den of Geek breakdown reads as Cassandra controlling Wolverine. That is an interpretation of the footage, not an official explanation in Marvel’s trailer announcement; the shot alone does not establish her full plan or the limits of her abilities.
What does Mr. Paradox and the TVA want?
Matthew Macfadyen plays Mr. Paradox, a new MCU character connected to the Time Variance Authority (TVA). D23 says TVA agents arrive at Wade’s birthday party and Paradox wants to recruit Deadpool for a special assignment. That makes him a recruiter and plot catalyst, not the same kind of clearly identified antagonist as Cassandra Nova. D23’s feature provides this role context.
Which X-Men villains appear in the trailer?
A fast background shot has prompted identifications of several familiar mutants. These are readings of trailer footage, rather than a character list confirmed in Marvel’s announcement.
| Character | What the available coverage says | Certainty and role |
|---|---|---|
| Lady Deathstrike | The Den of Geek breakdown identifies her in the background near the Ant-Man skull. | Editorial identification in a brief shot; no major story role is established by that sighting. |
| Azazel | The same breakdown identifies him in that background group. | Editorial identification; the trailer announcement does not confirm a role. |
| Toad | The same breakdown identifies him in that background group. | Editorial identification; the trailer announcement does not confirm a role. |
| Callisto | The same breakdown identifies her in that background group. | Editorial identification; the trailer announcement does not confirm a role. |
| Pyro | The breakdown says he appears elsewhere in the footage. | Reported visual identification; a brief appearance does not by itself establish his importance. |
| Sabretooth | The breakdown notes a possible sighting. | Tentative; do not treat the identification as confirmed. |
These sightings may explain why the trailer is often discussed in terms of returning X-Men adversaries, but they should not be mistaken for confirmation that every character is a principal villain or a major participant in the story. The breakdown identifies the figures and marks Sabretooth as uncertain.

The same breakdown reads the footage as showing Dogpool, Alioth in the Void, and a giant Ant-Man skull used as a base. Those are useful visual details to spot, but their deeper story meanings are not established by the trailer evidence cited here. In particular, seeing the skull or Alioth does not, on its own, confirm who controls a location or what a particular sequence means. Den of Geek’s April 22, 2024 breakdown offers those readings.
How to separate confirmed roles from trailer guesses
- Officially established: Deadpool and Wolverine are the central pair; the synopsis says Wade must convince Wolverine to help save his homeworld.
- Named in official character coverage: Cassandra Nova is played by Emma Corrin; Mr. Paradox is played by Matthew Macfadyen and seeks to recruit Deadpool.
- Visual interpretations: the returning-mutant sightings and details such as Dogpool, Alioth, and the Ant-Man skull come from analysis of the footage, not a complete official roster.
- Especially uncertain: Sabretooth is only a possible sighting in the cited breakdown.
Marvel identified the trailer as a brand-new trailer on April 22, 2024, and named director Shawn Levy along with cast members including Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, and Matthew Macfadyen in its announcement. This breakdown refers to that specific trailer; a later trailer may show different footage.
