Vernon Kay and Paddy McGuinness have the clearest documented ties to Bolton Wanderers among four high-profile names associated with the club. Amir Khan is a plausible Bolton-linked candidate, while Peter Kay’s football allegiance is disputed. This is an editorial shortlist, not a definitive ranking: no authoritative source measures which celebrity supporters are “most famous.”
How this shortlist is judged
Being famous in Bolton, or being associated with the town, is not the same as supporting Bolton Wanderers. The four names below reflect public prominence and the available evidence of a club connection; the evidence is much stronger for some than for others.

Bolton Wanderers’ four best-known celebrity-linked names
Vernon Kay
Broadcaster Vernon Kay has the strongest explicit endorsement from the club in this group. Bolton Wanderers described him as “a lifelong Wanderers’ supporter” when reporting that he hosted the club’s end-of-season awards in 2024 (Bolton Wanderers, 23 April 2024).
Paddy McGuinness
Comedian and television presenter Paddy McGuinness has direct, dated confirmation of his support. In 2016, the club called him a “boyhood Bolton fan” and covered his appearance in a match featuring club legends (Bolton Wanderers, 20 May 2016). Bolton Council described him as someone who “still supports Bolton Wanderers” in 2017 (Bolton Council, 17 October 2017).

Amir Khan
Boxer Amir Khan is a prominent Bolton-linked figure and was included in The Guardian’s 2010 list of Bolton celebrities. That listing establishes a local association, not active support for the football club. The available sources here do not independently confirm that he currently follows Wanderers (The Guardian, 23 December 2010).
Peter Kay
Comedian Peter Kay is another famous name associated with Bolton, and he also appears in The Guardian’s 2010 list. But that is not evidence that he is a Wanderers supporter. A 2025 FourFourTwo report quotes McGuinness describing Kay as not interested in football, which makes it especially risky to label him an avid or lifelong fan (FourFourTwo, 26 December 2025). His inclusion here reflects fame and Bolton association, not a confirmed club allegiance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are Peter Kay and Amir Khan confirmed Bolton fans?
Not on the evidence cited here. For Khan, the available source establishes his place among Bolton celebrities but does not establish current football fandom. For Peter Kay, the recent account of McGuinness’s remarks points in the opposite direction from a confident claim that he is an avid football supporter. Neither should be presented as a confirmed active Wanderers fan without clearer direct evidence.
Why there is no definitive “top four”
None of the sources provides a comparative fame measure or an authoritative ranking of celebrity supporters. Bolton Council’s materials also refer to prominent people associated with the town, but local prominence alone cannot establish support for the club (Bolton Council, Corporate Peer Challenge: Position Statement 2024). The most defensible conclusion is therefore a shortlist: Kay and McGuinness have direct support evidence, while Khan and Peter Kay are better described as famous Bolton-linked figures whose football allegiance is less certain.
