Borderline is Jimmy Warden’s 2025 feature film, a darkly comic thriller set in 1990s Los Angeles. Samara Weaving plays pop star Sofia, whose obsessive fan Paul Duerson (Ray Nicholson) takes her hostage because he believes they are destined to marry. Here are the film’s premise, cast, release details, viewing options and UK content guidance.
What is Borderline about?
Set in 1990s Los Angeles, the film follows a bodyguard trying to protect world-famous pop star Sofia and her athlete boyfriend from a determined stalker. Paul Duerson, an obsessive fan, targets Sofia and takes her hostage, convinced they are destined to marry. Brightlight Pictures describes the setup as a bodyguard protecting the couple from the stalker; Apple TV’s synopsis emphasizes Paul’s fixation and the kidnapping.
The tone mixes thriller, horror and comedy rather than staying within one genre. Apple TV labels it a thriller-comedy, while the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) lists comedy, horror and thriller. Reviews have differed on whether the film’s abrupt shifts between comedy and horror work.

Violence and content guidance
For its UK VOD/streaming record, classified on August 8, 2025, the BBFC advises viewers to expect strong violence, language and threat. Its description refers to stabbings, heavy blows, throat slashing, kidnapping and threats at gunpoint; it notes that the darkly comic tone sometimes undercuts the threat. The BBFC also warns that flashing images may affect viewers susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy.
This is UK classification guidance for the listed VOD/streaming record, not a rating for every country or platform. Viewers who need the classification for a particular release should check that version’s local listing.

What critics say
The critical response has focused in part on whether the film’s blend of comedy and horror holds together. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus reads: “Elevated by Samara Weaving and Ray Nicholson’s performances to a point, this fun-enough romp eventually finds itself on the Borderline.” That is the aggregator’s consensus, not a quote from an individual reviewer.
At the time of the Apple TV listing captured for this guide, its page displayed a 59% Tomatometer from 61 reviews: 36 fresh and 25 rotten. Review aggregates change as ratings are added, so this is a dated snapshot rather than a fixed measure of the film’s reception. Brightlight Pictures’ press notes praise the film’s design and nostalgic soundtrack; that is distributor framing, not a critical consensus.
