Blue Velvet is David Lynch’s 1986 mystery about a young man whose discovery of a severed ear leads him into the violence and secrets hidden beneath his small town’s polished surface. Lynch wrote and directed the film, which stars Kyle MacLachlan, Laura Dern, Isabella Rossellini, and Dennis Hopper.
What is Blue Velvet about?
After returning home from college, Jeffrey Beaumont finds a severed human ear in a field. His curiosity draws him into an investigation with Sandy Williams and toward Dorothy Vallens, a lounge singer. The trail brings him into contact with Frank Booth, a violent man who is possessively fixated on Dorothy.

The ear is the story’s inciting discovery, but it also signals a shift in perspective: Jeffrey’s inquiry carries him beneath the town’s calm, picturesque exterior and into a world of danger and secrecy. The film mixes mystery and menace with dark humor rather than treating the town’s respectable surface as the whole story. In the Leeds International Film Festival program, Lynch explained the image this way: “It had to be an ear because it’s an opening. An ear is wide and you can go down into it.”

How was Blue Velvet made?
Criterion reports that filming began in Wilmington, North Carolina, in early 1986. German photographer Peter Braatz wrote to Lynch and was invited to document the production. The material he gathered later informed “Blue Velvet” Revisited, a feature-length behind-the-scenes film.
What is the film’s central idea?
One useful way to read Blue Velvet is as a collision between a town’s orderly appearance and the violence and secrecy Jeffrey uncovers. That contrast is grounded in the film’s mystery structure: the ear discovery pulls him away from the familiar surface and toward what has been concealed. It is an interpretive lens, not a single definitive explanation of the film.

Yes. Criterion lists a two-disc 4K UHD + Blu-ray special edition featuring a 4K digital restoration supervised and approved by David Lynch. It includes Dolby Vision HDR and an alternate original 2.0 surround soundtrack, along with a substantial group of extras:
- 53 minutes of deleted scenes and alternate takes assembled by Lynch

- The 2019 documentary It’s a Strange World: The Filming of “Blue Velvet”
- Lynch reading from Room to Dream
Criterion also lists a one-disc Blu-ray edition. The listed special-edition features should not be assumed to be included with a separate Blu-ray listing unless that listing confirms them.
