Bodkin may suit true-crime podcast fans who enjoy investigative stories that question how a case becomes a narrative—but it is fiction, not a dramatization of a real crime. Netflix describes it as a darkly comic thriller about a podcast team investigating old disappearances in an invented Irish town.

What is Bodkin about?

The seven-episode series follows Gilbert, a podcaster played by Will Forte; Dove, an investigative journalist played by Siobhán Cullen; and Emmy, a researcher played by Robyn Cara. They travel to a small Irish town to look into disappearances connected to its Samhain celebration 25 years earlier. The series combines mystery and thriller plotting with dark comedy.

Netflix’s official synopsis calls the group “a motley crew of podcasters,” while its Ireland listing categorizes the show as drama, mystery, comedy and thriller. The listing also uses the descriptors “Offbeat” and “Suspenseful.” Netflix Tudum’s series feature and Netflix’s Ireland title page give the cast, premise and episode information.

Is it based on a true crime case?

No. Netflix says Bodkin is “entirely fictional.” The creators have stressed that the town, people and mystery were invented, and that the mystery was deliberately kept away from any real true-crime story. Co-showrunner Alex Metcalf put it plainly: “Not a real story, not a real place.”

Creator Jez Scharf explained the choice this way: “It’s a fake town, it’s a fake place. It’s all fake people. The mystery itself, we worked very hard to find something that is in no way adjacent to a real true crime story. The fictionality of it was very deliberate.” That distinction matters: the series uses the language and conventions of true-crime investigation, but it does not offer a reconstruction of an actual case.

Why might true-crime podcast fans enjoy it?

It makes the podcast team part of the story

The investigators are not a neutral voice hovering outside the mystery. The series gives viewers a podcaster, a journalist and a researcher with different approaches to the work. That setup lets the drama examine how a team gathers information, decides what matters and turns events into a story for an audience.

It plays with uncertainty and narrative

Scharf said the premise grew partly from his own consumption of true-crime documentaries and podcasts, and from thinking about the genre’s morality. He described the question at the heart of that concern as, “How much of this is true, and how much is a story?” His answer: “Once you start asking that question, all of reality falls apart.”

For the show’s unpredictable narrative journey, Scharf named S-Town as the most influential podcast: “That was the kind of journey that we were trying to map ourselves against — that the truth is always kind of unexpected.” This is an influence on the story’s shape, not a claim that Bodkin retells S-Town.

It brings a comic edge to the mystery

Bodkin is not presented as a sober, documentary-style investigation. Netflix describes it as a darkly comedic thriller, so its appeal is likely strongest for viewers open to tonal shifts and humor alongside suspense. The show’s interest in podcast storytelling is part of a fictional mystery, rather than a promise of forensic detail or a factual case history.

How does it relate to Serial?

Co-showrunner Alex Metcalf calls Bodkin “a post-Serial story.” That phrase places the series in a cultural moment shaped by prominent serialized true-crime podcasts; it does not mean Bodkin continues, adapts or is officially connected to Serial. The distinction is useful for setting expectations: the show riffs on the podcast-investigation format while telling its own invented story.

Who is it best suited to?

  • A good fit: viewers who like mysteries built around podcast reporting, competing interpretations and questions about how a story is shaped.
  • Also a fit: fans comfortable with dark comedy mixed into a suspenseful investigation.
  • Less suited: viewers looking for a true-case documentary, a factual account of Irish crime, or a direct adaptation of a real podcast.

How many episodes are there, and where is it listed?

Netflix lists Bodkin as a 2024 title with seven episodes on its Ireland title page. That is a regional listing, not a guarantee of availability, plan details or pricing in every country; Netflix’s catalog and terms can vary by market and change over time. See the Netflix Ireland listing for the regional title information.

Verdict

Bodkin is a strong possibility for true-crime podcast fans who want a fictional mystery about investigators and the stories they construct, with dark comedy in the mix. Its connection to the genre is thematic and stylistic—not factual: the creators deliberately invented the town, characters and case.
