What is Black Sails about?
The story follows Captain Flint and the crew of the Walrus as they contend with rival pirates and colonial power for wealth and control around New Providence Island in the Bahamas. John Silver joins Flint’s crew after his merchant ship is taken, carrying a page from a captain’s log that Flint needs. Their changing relationship becomes one of the drama’s central threads.

STARZ lists four seasons and rates the series TV-MA. Its listed cast includes Toby Stephens, Hannah New, Luke Arnold, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Tom Hopper, and Toby Schmitz. The series was created by Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine, with Michael Bay as an executive producer and Neil Marshall directing the pilot, according to Netflix Tudum. Is Black Sails based on a book?
It draws on Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1883 novel, but it is not a direct adaptation. The show is framed as taking place about 20 years before the novel and uses characters including Captain Flint, Long John Silver, Billy Bones, and Ben Gunn. As Netflix Tudum’s Liam Mathews put it, “The events of Black Sails take place about 20 years before Treasure Island, and therefore the two don’t directly connect much.”

The series invents its own story and does not strictly follow the novel’s canon. Treat Treasure Island as a companion read that adds context to some familiar names, not as a book whose plot the show retells. The source does not identify a particular edition as a tie-in.
Is Black Sails historically accurate?
No: it is historical fiction, not a reliable account of pirate history. Historical figures such as Charles Vane, Calico Jack Rackham, Anne Bonny, and Edward “Blackbeard” Teach appear in heavily fictionalized versions. Netflix Tudum notes that most scenarios are invented and that the characters’ interior lives were created for the show.

Where was Black Sails filmed?
The story is set around New Providence in the Bahamas, but filming took place at Cape Town Film Studios in Cape Town, South Africa, according to Netflix Tudum. The on-screen Caribbean setting should not be mistaken for the production location.
