Strings went on to play a show in Lexington, Kentucky, where he announced her death. In 2026, NPR reported that she died of an overdose and spoke with Strings about grief and the album he made in her memory.

How did Billy Strings describe coping with grief?
In an interview with NPR’s Morning Edition, Strings described music as a way to process his feelings: “It was a rough thing, losing my mom, and my guitar has always been that kind of friend – where I can lean on it to deal with all these feelings.”
NPR also reported that Strings remembered his mother introducing him to music when he was a child, including playing The Beatles’ White Album backwards for him. The recollection connects her influence to his musical life without reducing his grief to a single event or explanation.
