Billy Porter withdrew from Broadway’s Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club in September 2025 after the production announced he was recovering from a serious case of sepsis. The production also ended its run earlier than planned, closing on September 21, 2025.
Why did Billy Porter leave Cabaret?
On September 7, 2025, the production announced that Porter had to withdraw because of a serious case of sepsis. The announcement, reported by Broadway.com, said his doctors were confident he would make a full recovery and had advised him to keep a restful schedule for the next couple of weeks. That was the production’s statement about his condition and medical advice at the time; it is not a current health update.
Why did the Broadway production close early?
The show had been scheduled to close on October 19, 2025. On September 7, the production announced it would instead end its Broadway run on September 21. Producer Adam Speers described the decision as “the painful decision to end our Broadway run on September 21,” in a statement reported by Broadway.com. The production’s announcement linked the early closing to Porter’s withdrawal.
Who played the Emcee after Porter withdrew?
For the final two weeks, Emcee alternates Marty Lauter and David Merino shared the role opposite Marisha Wallace as Sally Bowles, according to Broadway.com’s report on the production’s plan.

When did Cabaret play on Broadway?
The production opened at the August Wilson Theatre on April 21, 2024, and closed on September 21, 2025. The Internet Broadway Database lists 18 previews and 592 regular performances for the completed run; see its production record.
What later reporting said about Porter’s illness
In a March 18, 2026 report, the Los Angeles Times described Porter’s later account of a urinary infection, hospitalization, coma, and sepsis. Those details come from retrospective reporting and should be distinguished from the production’s brief September 2025 announcement. The announcement itself did not identify a cause or describe a clinical course.

Does the 2021 Cabaret cast recording feature Billy Porter?
No. The physical Cabaret: 2021 London Cast Recording is associated with the London production and features Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley, not Porter’s Broadway performance. The Kit Kat Club announced the CD release and said vinyl would follow; Decca’s shop lists the CD. It is an adjacent recording of the musical, not a recording of Porter or the Broadway cast.
