Bhakshak has the makings of a forceful investigative drama, but its blunt storytelling and uneven pacing weaken the impact of its serious subject. Bhumi Pednekar brings earnestness to the lead role; the script, in Shubhra Gupta’s assessment for The Indian Express, gives her too little nuance to work with. Gupta rated the film 2 out of 5 in 2024.
Does Bhakshak work as a drama?
Directed by Pulkit and written by Pulkit and Jyotsana Nath, Bhakshak follows Vaishali Singh, a local journalist investigating abuse concealed at a shelter for young girls. Its premise offers a natural source of tension: a reporter trying to expose wrongdoing in the face of resistance. But a grave subject does not, by itself, make a compelling drama.
In her 2024 review for The Indian Express, Shubhra Gupta argues that the film handles its material with a sledgehammer rather than nuance. She finds its storytelling basic and its message too emphatic, so the investigation’s urgency is often undercut by a preachy tone. Gupta’s 2-out-of-5 rating is her critical judgment, not an audience poll.
That distinction matters: the issue is not that the film takes a clear moral position, but that its insistence can crowd out the dramatic work of building complexity, tension and persuasion. The result, in Gupta’s reading, feels more like a lecture than a story that earns its force through the characters and events.

How does Bhumi Pednekar’s performance fare?
Pednekar plays Vaishali Singh, and Gupta recognizes the actor’s earnest effort to make the journalist believable. The weakness she identifies lies more in the writing than in the lead performance: Vaishali is not developed with enough nuance to make the investigation feel as layered as its subject demands.
Sanjay Mishra, Aditya Srivastava and Sai Tamhankar are also among the principal cast named in Netflix’s announcement of the film. The available review evidence supports a specific assessment of Pednekar’s earnestness, rather than a broader claim that every performance succeeds or fails in the same way.

Does the investigation keep its momentum?
Gupta notes that the film’s attention to Vaishali’s home life provides some relief from the investigation, but also makes the film longer than it needs to be. A personal subplot can deepen a reporter’s character; here, the review suggests, it distracts from the central inquiry without adding enough dramatic value to justify the detour.
The film’s most direct address to viewers presents a related problem. Gupta questions a fourth-wall moment in which Vaishali admonishes the audience for not caring. The intention may be to provoke, but, as the review observes, telling viewers what to feel is not always the most persuasive way to reach them.

Is Bhakshak based on a true story?
It is inspired by true events, but it is not presented as a documentary or a scene-by-scene factual account. Netflix described the film as inspired by true events in its January 17, 2024 announcement. The Indian Express review connects its fictionalized town, Munnawarpur, to the Muzaffarpur shelter-home case. The renamed setting is a reminder that characters and scenes should not automatically be treated as documentary fact.
Director Pulkit said, “Our aim was to shed light on the harsh realities of society and spark conversations that lead to meaningful change,” while Ruchikaa Kapoor Sheikh, Director, Original Films, Netflix India, called it “a hard-hitting story, inspired by true events.” Those are statements of creative intent and framing, not independent confirmation of the film’s factual accuracy or social impact.

Is Bhakshak worth watching?
If you are interested in a dramatized investigative story and Pednekar’s earnest lead performance, Bhakshak may still hold your attention. If you want a nuanced, tightly paced drama that lets its subject speak through layered storytelling, Gupta’s critique points to a frustrating gap between the film’s potential and its execution. A contemporary Scroll review also used the “squandered opportunity” framing, though that does not establish a universal critical or audience consensus.
