Why Trey Anastasio called it a dream come true
Before “Kitty’s Back,” Anastasio told the crowd about seeing Springsteen and the E Street Band at the Jadwin Cage on November 1, 1978, when he was 14. He said that concert had inspired the way his own band was playing, then introduced Springsteen after asking him backstage to join them:

“I grew up in New Jersey. I swam at this beach as a kid. When I was 14-years-old I was allowed to go to my first concert ever. My 16-year-old sister took me. And that concert was the Jadwin Cage, November 1st, 1978 – I saw Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band. So if you’re wondering where I got the idea to play like we were just playing, the whole show was like that. And I’m incredibly honored right now — we were backstage and asked Bruce if he would come out and play one with us and he said ‘yes.’ So this a dream of a lifetime for me – ladies and gentlemen, Bruce Springsteen!”

Springsteen and The Gaslight Anthem had played together before
The 2024 “American Slang” performance was not their first time sharing the song. Springsteen joined The Gaslight Anthem for it at Convention Hall in Asbury Park on December 9, 2011. His official archive described that as his third onstage appearance with the New Brunswick band, following two London shows in 2009. Springsteen’s archive recaps the 2011 appearance.
“History Books” marked a different kind of milestone: the 2024 festival performance brought Springsteen together live with the band on the album title track he had featured on in the studio. The Gaslight Anthem’s Bandcamp page lists the digital album’s release date as July 12, 2024. See the album listing on Bandcamp.
